I have been told, here at FR, that God only creates lesser beings.
Is this because he chooses not to create someone equal to Himself, or is God unable to create someone equal to Himself?

Not according to the Scriptures of God. Only Scripture.
That is a fun question. The universe is curved, it is expanding into itself. Remember time and distance are variables. If you could travel in any direction out to the edge of the Universe, you will find yourself headed back here again.
Simply saying "that's a dumb question" just turns people off to faith.

No, a truthful answer is best. Others gave it the softly-softly approach, but knowing God is about knowing truth, and the truth is, it’s a dumb question. Questioner should consider why it is a dumb question and do some research.
Understanding the difference between the dumb and the reasonable is one of the greatest gifts God gives through his word
Wouldn't your theory depend on whether space is positively or negatively curved?
Maybe God realizes that if you want something done right you have to do it yourself.
God was not created. He always was (”I AM”), is, and always will be. He is eternal, omnipotent. He created everything else. He probably smiles at us trying to figure Him out. Don’t worry about trying to get your mind around how vast he is.
You’ve asked a good question, fred. I hope you seriously consider these fine answers you’ve recieved.
There is none greater than God - or even his equal. He is all powerful, all knowing, ever present. Infinite in His glory!
what do you want to hear ? - not to ascribe motive, but it seems youre fishing for a polytheistic answer to fit your doctrine....which is ?

There are a million things God is unable to do; lie, cheat, murder, you name the sin God can’t do it.
Why? There isn't any point in it. Its not our's to know the mind of God.

I didn't say it was a dumb question. It is a pointless question. Would you also feel obliged to answer whether God wears boxers or briefs? Treating the faith seriously, as it should be, doesn't turn people off to it. However, I think that treating it like a game of Dungeons and Dragons does.
I’ve found that it is vanity to attempt to wrap my human logic around the infinite magnificence that is my Creator.
Including “Thou shall have no gods before me”.
