Most Catholic churches have announcements in the bulletin about protocol for communion

As mentioned above, there most certainly was a written program handout. It would have explained the rules for Communion in it. (Perhaps he forgot his reading glasses and all of political aides with him are illiterate.)

At this point, the "scandal" is that the Telegraph Journal and Henneberry insist on turning this into a public controversy.

The problem with having “Latins” in high government positions is that they often end up dead at some point. And then a funeral mass follows.

Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion

On November 14, 1996, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops approved the following guidelines on the reception of Holy Communion. The guidelines seek to remind all those who may attend Catholic liturgies of the present discipline of the Church with regard to the sharing of Eucharistic Communion.

For Catholics
As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.

For our fellow Christians
We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that they may all be one” (Jn. 17:21).

Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 Section 4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 Section 3).

For those not receiving Holy Communion
All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another.

For non-Christians
We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.

This was a funeral, not a worship service, so I don’t know if there was a regular bulletin with the protocol for communion.

In fact, what seems odd about this story is how much we don’t know, almost as if those who are pushing it are trying not to learn anything that would actually explain what happened.

For example, we know he took the wafer. That’s it. We don’t know he didn’t partake of it, nobody saw him put it in his pocket. We don’t know what announcements were made before communion. We don’t know how many non-catholics were invited to the funeral, or how many of them took communion. We don’t know if there was a bulletin. We don’t know if there was a discussion before this happened.

But, despite not knowing any of that, we have a headline that says he stuck the wafer in his pocket, a headline clearly meant to offend Catholics and get them up in arms over his actions. It is a devisive headline, playing to the differences between Protestant and Catholic theology on this matter, and trying to stir up a religious fight.

...what’s sad is Canada is majority Catholic.....most Catholics here vote Liberal or New Democrat....it’s sickening. But I think things might be slowly changing. As for abortion - it’s too late - nobody stood against it, and now the act of it has been seared into the psyche of most Canadians, sadly, especially the women, who are mostly feminazis.

You even dare to bring up the subject from a pro life stance and you will be crucified, pardon the analogy. People say American women have gone rotten at the hands of feminism, you should meet some urban Canadian women.....their souls are so corrupt they rot from the inside out. I’ve dated a lot over the past 10 years, many are messed up emotionally, on drugs, drunken, bitter and angry.

“So is the media actually siding with the Catholic Church in their blood lust to smear Harper?”

Agree. When was the last time the MSM actually sided with Catholics. I believe Harper didn’t do it intentionally and agree with others here that the priest, the protector of Holy Communion, should have given instructions. Our priests do that in a kind and charitable way at funerals and weddings.

The media is very selective in their biases, look at Michael Jackson, they (rightfully so IMO) vilified him for his behaviour for the last decade or so, now, however, they’ve done an about-face and laud him as if he were the second coming. Now, as a matter of convenience, they see a Conservative PM and decide to push the Catholic point of view in order to make him look bad, so I suppose they think the Catholic Church is all of a sudden the lesser of two evils. Funny too that they smear Palin who is a family person yet support Jackson who is in all likeliness a kiddie fiddler.....it takes some real twisted morals to become a journalist evidently....
