OK, so tell me that I am not paranoid. I am the pastor of a small church in New Jersey. I just got a call from very pushy census worker, asking for our church's help in promoting the US census. I said, how can I help. She said, by putting info in your bulletin, website, etc. I said, OK, I'll do that. Then she wanted to set up a meeting for me to meet with her supervisor. I said not thank-you. I said, actually the only thing we need to fill out is our name adress and number of people in the household correct? She went on about how we need to get the census done for federal dollars, blah, blah, blah. I said, I will make people aware, but that was it. She continued to try to get info about our church. My name, my address. My email address. Website address, etc. I just gave me the willies. Finally I said, you know I really don't the federal government needs all this info about my church, sorry and (with difficulty) got off the line.
The only constitutionally justified reason for the census is population for representative apportionment, everything else while they may want and use it for other things is above and beyond the constitutional mandate for the Census, and I will not and do not answer.
I’ve been wondering something myself - in about a six week period, I’ve seen 3 different pre-census workers walking down my street looking at and counting houses I guess. I wanted to yell at the last one, “same number of houses on this street since the day they were built in 1956. Same number of houses on this street since the last census worker came by a couple of weeks ago.” If I see another one, I’m calling the police!

You don’t need meds. You’re not paranoid. You have absolutely no guarantee that callers are who they say they are and asking for personal data is a very common phishing ploy.

I was required to walk all over neighborhoods, taking notes on the electric grid, number of house, who had AC, etc.
Lots of folks called the cops on me.

I report myself as Native American as I was born in the US of parents who were born here from parents who were born here. I also remember my great-grandmother telling stories of the young Indian woman who was (secretly) her grandmother. ;-)

Had a similar one last week. No caller ID showing, so I asked them for their number so I could call them back. They wouldn’t give me the number and that’s when I started asking THEM the questions. Name, Supervisor, Census Worker ID number, etc. They hung up.
good point...I did only see the “census worker” sign on one of them, but they all carried the same kind of black over the shoulder brief case/bag. Next time I’ll ask.
I’m still not sure how they failed to notice that “l” when they came up that email address. Stupid government proof readers.

also watch out for social engineers... pine info for identity theft. Without seeing them in person and their state credentials etc I would not give info over the phone so easily...
You should turn the tables if you get another call. Start asking the caller for information in order to prove they are who they say they are. Tell them that you do not give out any personal information over the phone being that you have no way of verifying who it is that is really calling.
I would also do the same thing for anyone who shows up at the door as well. Start asking for id, claim you also want personal id to verify who they really are. Continue pressing for further documentation to proof who they are (credit cards, birth certificate, etc…) Still in the end tell them that you will not provide any personal information without even further proof of who they are.
You can never be to careful. Identity theft and all.
You should just call the cops anyhow. How do you know who they really are? :-)
I once has some older teens knocking on my door collecting in the name of a local church. Turned them away and called the cops. Cops came and busted them walking down the street. Turned out they were scammers.

Told him and his thugs what I think about all of his tactics. Counting the days until they come for me now................ if MANY like-thinking people do what I did and what you did, it’s gonna take them awhile to silence us.

Not being facetious, there are protections in the law concerning the census bureau and religious beliefs.
Title 13, Chapter 7, Subchapter II, section 221, paragraph c:
Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body.
Between several “free” online sites, they could get all that info if they wanted it anyway...they were just being lazy hoping you’d save them some work. Ever look at zabasearch.com. Try running your name, or what about whitepages.com, your address, phone number, business, age, etc. might well be listed there in the free domain. I do security checks for an online retail site when the order seems “questionable” (we’re trying to make sure we’re not shipping a fraudulent order.) Anyhoo, I can dig up a lot of info on somebody just by using free sites, if I know your address, and you own your home, I can find your name and tell you how much you paid for your house, when you bought it, who you bought it from, etc. just by using the property appraiser’s database in a county. I can reverse search your phone number and find your name or reverse search your address and find your name. Google might even show me a photo of your house, zillow will tell me approximately what it’s worth in today’s market. The internet is wonderful, but there’s not much security in the way of private info anymore.
When it comes to ANY form asking for my race, I just check the OTHER box and write HUMAN on the blank line beside it.

You're right. I worked for the 1980 census and we never EVER called a citizen regarding their census data. We were required to visit them in person.
the arrogant, pushy, hyper-hormoned gen X’ers they recruit just come across like they own everything and everyone. Young people are very sensitive to the spirits of their superiors.

Should I get a call from someone claiming to be a “census worker” or anything of the kind, I will provide no, repeat no information whatsoever. I will ask question after questions in an attempt to have them prove they are who they say they are, which of course is impossible over the phone. So I expect they’ll hang up on me.
Maybe if you inquired about the health status of their soul and started to explain that Jesus loves even them they would hang up and bother someone else.
I saw a rundown of the groups which will be instrumental in providing census takers. Each is a radical left wing organization, from ACORN to the Communist Party USA. I believe the list had been included in a post here on FR.
