“I once celebrated a memorial Mass for a local ‘madame’ who ran a brothel near my Cathedral.”

I can’t help but ask: why was a notorious human trafficker and prostitute given a Catholic funeral? He doesn’t mention her abandonment of the “lifestyle” or her repentence before death.

Sorry but in my opinion, the above statement alone raises more dire questions than the Cardinal attempts to answer here.

Ah, but he was showing compassion. Compassion is SOOOO much more important than the Ten Commandments. The Cardinal summed up the abuses in the Catholic Church in that one sentence.

Such a celebration does nothing for the dead woman, and gives scandal to all the living parishoners.
