The Pope probably assumed Homer “mmmm beer” Simpson was Irish Catholic.

(Insanity - electing the same people over and over and expecting different results.)
If Homer is Catholic, I guess Reverend Lovejoy is going to be excommunicated or at least defrocked for committing the sin of matrimony. :)
Its Bart that is roman catholic..

No way. When have the Simpsons ever shown any guilt?

At least this article calls the paper “semi official”.

Homer Simpson is as Christian as our current president, Obama.
Both throw their lot in with EVERY faith in a "feel good" sense and take home NONE of the messages from ANY faith.

(The establishment clause isn't just against my OWN government establishing state religion in America)
If Lisa Simpson hadn't become a Buddhist, I'd say she was closest to being a Catholic. She would love the homilies I hear every week about amnesty for all, universal healthcare is a basic human right, yada yada yada.

One of the funniest Simpsons episodes ever was when Bart and Homer started going to a Catholic Church.
Didn’t Homer and Bart convert to Catholicism in one episode? In this episode Marge was annoyed that Heaven was boring and she demaned to speak to Jesus. Meanwhile Jesus was over in “Catholic Heaven” having the time of his life with all the great Italian food and wine, Mexican dancing and pinatas, etc.

I don't watch the show but I understand that Homer Simpson likes doughnuts. That must be the connection--lots of Catholic parishes have coffee and doughnuts in the parish hall after Sunday Mass.
Jean doesn't seem to know that the no-meat-on-Fridays rule was relaxed decades ago (now it's only for Fridays in Lent).
That reminds me of the joke (from when the rule was still in effect) about the missionary who was trying to convert a tribe of cannibals. When someone came to visit and asked him if he had persuaded them to stop eating people, he said, "No, but now they only eat fishermen on Fridays."
Homer and Bart are dumb enough to be CINOs.
