Although the sophisticated may deride them as simple-minded, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said traditional Christians should have the courage to embrace their faith.
Scalia spoke to members of the St. Thomas More Society of Maryland who gathered Oct. 21 at the Westin Hotel in Annapolis following the 52nd annual Red Mass, held at nearby St. Mary Church. The liturgy, celebrated by Archbishop Edwin F. OBrien, marked the beginning of the judicial year.
During a hotel banquet, the St. Thomas More Society honored Scalia with its Man for All Seasons Award, given to members of the legal profession who embody the ideals of St. Thomas More.
Scalia outlined a long list of Christian beliefs that he said are greeted with derision by the worldly dogmas including Christs divinity, the Virgin birth and Christs resurrection.
Surely those who adhere to all or most of these traditional Christian beliefs are regarded in the educated circles that you and I travel in as, well, simple-minded, Scalia asserted.
The Catholic justice cited a story in The Washington Post that described Christian fundamentalists as poorly educated and easily led.
The same attitude applies, of course, to traditional Catholics, Scalia said, who do such positively peasant-like things as saying the rosary, kneeling in adoration before the Eucharist, going on pilgrimages to Lourdes or Medjugorje and worst of all following indiscriminately, rather than in smorgasbord fashion, the teachings of the pope.
Scalia said believers should embrace the ridicule of the world.
As St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, he said, we are fools for Christs sake.

Of Scalia’s citing of the priest with the stigmata, reason and intellect can only bring the observer of such phenomena to this conclusion...realities exist beyond scientific measurement that can cause observable effects in our matter universe. As for whether or not these sources are good or evil, we only have scripture for use in testing the moral and spiritual soundness of these phenomena.

Yes! Count me among those peasants! I am too "A fool for Christ!"
I absolutely love Scalia! Wish we had 8 more minds like his on the Court.
1 Tim 3:15 but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.
BTW, Justice Scalia jokes that he calls his son “Father.”
This is true. He has a son, “Father Paul Scalia.” I believe Father Paul serves at a Catholic Church somewhere in virginia.
I really like those graphics.
