Thousands Joining Church at Easter in US

Bishops' Conference Features Conversion Stories Online

WASHINGTON, D.C., APRIL 15, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Tens of thousands of new Catholics are expected to join the Church at Easter, including a former Planned Parenthood director and seven members of the same family.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) released the statistics of those expected to join the Church based on participation in the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, a step in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults that takes place at the beginning of Lent.

Among those preparing to enter the Church is Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood clinic director and author of "Unplanned."

In an interview with ZENIT last month, Johnson explained, "The day I left Planned Parenthood, I was embraced by the loving arms of the people who had prayed for me for years, most of whom are Catholic."

She continued: "After attending some various Catholic parishes, I fell in love with the liturgy and found myself wanting to learn more and more each day.

"I found myself in awe of the devotion that my Catholic friends had that I didn't, and I knew I wanted that same devotion myself. Doug and I decided we want to be a part of what the Catholic Church stands for and we have found such purpose through the Church."

Johnson and her family will join the Church with 911 others in the Diocese of Austin, Texas.

James and Michelle House, formerly Episcopalian, will enter full communion with the Catholic Church in the San Francisco Archdiocese. The following week, five of their children will also be received into the Church.

Vitality

Thousands of new Catholics are expected in the archdioceses nationwide: 1,600 in New York; 811 in Philadelphia; 1,100 in Washington; more than 1,000 in Seattle; 875 in Portland, Oregon; 1,100 in Cincinnati, Ohio; 2,490 in Galveston-Houston, Texas; 1,912 in Atlanta; 504 in Louisville, Kentucky; 613 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and 643 in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The numbers in smaller dioceses reflect "the vitality" of the Church in the Midwest, South and Southeast regions of the country, the USCCB reported.

On Monday, the bishops' conference will begin featuring conversion stories from around the country on its media blog page.

Others preparing to enter the Church include an African woman who was raised Muslim, a marine set for deployment in June, and a secretary at the Diocese of Manchester, New Hampshire who has been sharing her conversion story online.

Cheryl Sickle, who works in the Office of Worship and Sacraments in Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia, observed, "Each year, some of the most touching moments at the Rite of Election include the emotions expressed."

"We see faces full of joy as catechumens and candidates alike realize the bigger picture of their decision to join the Church," she said.

Sickle continued: "We see the smiles of proud grandparents as their young grandchildren painstakingly sign the Book of the Elect, and the overwhelming emotions of wives or husbands, brought to tears, whose spouses are converting to the Roman Catholic faith after years of marriage.

"We see physically challenged people with a look of determination as they slowly and resolutely process forward, and the bond of belonging on the faces of a family who welcome into their midst and into their faith a newly-adopted son or daughter of a different ethnicity. It is a one-time rite, but the RCIA formation behind it lasts -- and changes -- a lifetime."

We have a very small parish and we have approximately 17 entering and a few who, as adults, are receiving confirmation, making their first communion, etc. For the size of this parish, that is a large number. AND, they are all SERIOUS about the Faith.

;-)

Then you should talk to an articulate, practicing, Catholic.

You have no idea what wellsprings of grace you cut yourself off from when you decide what the Church should be instead of allowing the Church to tell you what you should be.

God doesn’t usually punish those who refuse to follow his lead: he ignores them.

What good news for your parish. May it continue. As I said on an earlier thread — our Archdiocese had to split up the Rite of Election because there were so many!

I am so saddened by “fallen away Catholics,” particularly those who move to one of the myriad forms of Protestant biblical legalism. They remind me of the “tragedian” in CS Lewis’ “The Great Divorce.”

So consumed with the minutae of self-justification (apparently they can be saved by grace no matter the moral failure, but practicing Catholics can not) they don’t recognize how wispy and insubstantial they are next to the “wife” they imagine a grievence with.

Indeed, like the atheist, if they truly didn’t believe, why are they so angry at those who profess that they contrive reasons to be offended.

I don’t know what the numbers are for our diocese (Palm Beach), but at the rite of election I was amazed at how many people were either candidates or catechumens. And that was only half of them. They had another service for just as many people.

In the small RCIA program that my husband is in this year, there are 9 of them. Now that does not seem like many, but it’s more than we had in the last few years combined!

I look at it this way; when you are a kid, you view Christmas as the greatest feast going, counting on getting Christmas gifts and the likes. But as you come into adulthood, and for me, come into the second half of it, you realize TIME is not in my favor, I am slowly aging, dealing with a season citizen mother, etc. Also you get what I call those “God moment’s” when you realize you must give your all to the Lord and life your life for HIM.

That to me is what EASTER is all about.

I sense that as a very good sign that people, be they newbies coming into the RC Church via being recieved or by being baptized, as well as those coming back into the Church who have been away for a long time. This past Saturday, saw a long, very long line at my parish.

Also BTW, after so many years of spiritual/Catholic faith struggles, and having gone twice this Lent to confession, and while singing during the communion ritual in my choir, I began to tear-up. Had broken down and cried during the time after the communion song was sung. I had sensed that I had a very special “God moment” when I had gotten the full mercy and peace of the Divine Mercy.

True but they’re better there than among us. I met one such person a week ago lighting a candle. She started talking to me about angel “spirit guides” which she follows with other “protestants” on the net. When I mentioned that it was a new age thing, not in our doctrine, and not believed by mainline Protestants either she got soooooo angry. She told me she was a feminist, the Church was against women, etc. She’d been away from the Church for decades and returned 5 yrs prior and had nothing good to say about our brethern hadn’t been out in the real world and just stayed in the Church all these years. I explained I’d also been away but was thankful for those same people who kept the doors open while praying for us to come back. The whole thing was upsetting, she’s not from my parish so don’t expect to see her anytime soon, though I hope so...
