As much as I like individual Mormons I’ve known, am I the only one this seems a bit cultish to? If it’s church owned, is it tax-free?

Yep!
....got to watch that Church they feed the poor!

Asking Colofornian for information on Mormons is sort of like asking Julius Streicher for information on Jews.

You should talk, Vigilante. Your former denomination, the ELCA, has long had abortion coverage for its churchworkers -- perhaps going back to when you were a member, eh?

So $ you gave to the church may have wound up paying for an abortion, eh? Did you ever object to that when you were a member? No? You went along with it?

I saw recently that there's a movie out now on the BTK killer (Bind, Torture, Kill) guy. He was a lay president of an ELCA church in Kansas.

And then the most notorious late-term abortionist, George Tiller "the Killer," was an usher at a Wichita ELCA church...where he was killed. Just think of all of his tithing blood $ going into the ELCA denomination for so-called "ministry" purposes.

Tiller had been a member there for a long time. Did you ever object to that -- either when you were an ELCA member or after you left?

Sounds to me like some of your ELCA buds were trying to put the old killers of Jews to shame.

The only Q is: Did you go along with these kinds of dismemberment sanctioning or not?

FWIW, it has been decades since I left the ELCA. The first clue they were going off track was that the local pastor spent so much time trashing first Catholics, and when that become politcally incorrect following the Kennedy assassination, then Mormons that they failed to see the leftist termites gnawing at the entire structure of the organization.

Sadly, the ELCA has a lot of company in the same situation.

Isn’t it all about more than just feeding the poor? Satisfying spiritual hunger, feeding themselves, that kind of thing? Are some of those poor who are being fed people who lost a farm, or were otherwise adversely affected by a church-owned mega-agrobusiness, or whatever, in competition with their business? And if you look above, I didn’t single out LDS, mentioning the Seventh Day Adventists in Australia, and alluding to others.

“It would be nice if more churches owned and worked ranches instead of whining for more government handouts and helping settle Muslim terrorists in America as my former denomination (ELCA) does.”

I agree. It’s a very good idea. I really disagree with their theology, but this is at least one way in which this church’s members get it right.

Oh, I am so sorry ONY you have entered a nonsensical exchange. It will not matter what you say or how you say it, you will get responses that make no sense. You will understand the words, but strung together as they are by R, will - well at best only vaguely seem familiar.

The level of class envy here is sickening. Instead of throwing rocks at us Mormons for daring to be successful, go back to your crumbling and poorly funded churches and ask your priest there why they don’t take a lesson from us on how to become financially independent.

Ok, so we should extort 10% of a member's income in exchange for fast track to godhood. Not report the total income to members - keep them in the dark. Then take BILLIONS and invest it in a blackhole of a project in down town SLC, still keeping membership in the dark on the use of their money. . . .

You mean if we take a page from the Mormon General Authority playbook and tell our people:

(a) If you don't tithe, you won't get a temple recommend;
(b) If you don't get a temple recommend, you won't be with your family forever...(yes, we as the Mormon church have certain wealthy "ghettos" in heaven where some get to live with their families and wives -- and others don't)
(c) If you don't get a temple recommend, you also won't be eligible to live with Heavenly Father forever
(d) And if you don't get a temple recommend, you won't become a god.

So your very eligibility as a god; you're being the elite less-than-1% who gets to live with Heavenly Father forever; your eternal marriage and eternal relationship with your family...why all that depends upon giving 10%.

Just think what the Mormon church can do with a demanded 10% -- holding all the above over the heads of their membership.

Is that the page you're suggesting the Christian church copy from the Mormon playbook and begin implementing that?

(No thanks)

...crumbling and poorly funded churches...

Oh, and one more thing. Our church is God-made -- the very flesh and blood of His creative hand. The Mormon church and temples are man made -- and will indeed crumble and at the last day, burn away.

Our church has been sustained by Jesus Christ Himself. We are His body. The New Testament Greek word for "church" is ecclesia. It means "called-out ONES." "Ones" are not brick-and-mortar like the man-made structures of Mormondom. Christ-Ones will be resurrected. The Mormon church will not be.

29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (Jesus, John 5:29)

Sorry, Grig. "Damnation" is not a "degree of glory." And those who have claimed that Jesus failed in His Mission to keep His church alive are accusing Him firsthand. Mormons need to repent of this accusation, or regret that eternally!

Yeah...

...that looking prejudice can be REALLY bad for an organization!

"You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind.

The first man that committed the odious crime of killing one of his brethren will be cursed the longest of any one of the children of Adam. Cain slew his brother. Cain might have been killed, and that would have put a termination to that line of human beings.

This was not to be, and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and then another curse is pronounced upon the same race--that they should be the 'servant of servants', and they will be, until that curse is removed."

Brigham Young-President and second 'Prophet' of the Mormon Church, 1844-1877- Extract from Journal of Discourses.

Here are two examples from their 'other testament', the Book of Mormon.

2 Nephi 5: 21    'And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people, the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.'

Alma 3: 6    'And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men.'

August 27, 1954 in an address at Brigham Young University (BYU), Mormon Elder, Mark E Peterson, in speaking to a convention of teachers of religion at the college level, said:

"The discussion on civil rights, especially over the last 20 years, has drawn some very sharp lines. It has blinded the thinking of some of our own people, I believe. They have allowed their political affiliations to color their thinking to some extent.I think I have read enough to give you an idea of what the Negro is after."

"He is not just seeking the opportunity of sitting down in a cafe where white people eat. He isn't just trying to ride on the same streetcar or the same Pullman car with white people. It isn't that he just desires to go to the same theater as the white people. From this, and other interviews I have read, it appears that the Negro seeks absorption with the white race. He will not be satisfied until he achieves it by intermarriage."

"That is his objective and we must face it. We must not allow our feelings to carry us away, nor must we feel so sorry for Negroes that we will open our arms and embrace them with everything we have. Remember the little statement that we used to say about sin, 'First we pity, then endure, then embrace'...."

(Rosa Parks would have probably told Petersen under which wheel of the bus he should go sit.)

1967, (then) Mormon President Ezra Taft Benson said,

"The Communist program for revolution in America has been in progress for many years and is far advanced. First of all, we must not place the blame upon Negroes. They are merely the unfortunate group that has been selected by professional Communist agitators to be used as the primary source of cannon fodder."

We are told that on June 8, 1978, it was 'revealed' to the then president, Spencer Kimball, that people of color could now gain entry into the priesthood.

According to the church, Kimball spent many long hours petitioning God, begging him to give worthy black people the priesthood. God finally relented.

Sometime before the 'revelation' came to chief 'Prophet' Spencer Kimball in June 1978, General Authority, Bruce R McConkie had said:

"The Blacks are denied the Priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty.

The Negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain blessings are concerned, particularly the priesthood and the temple blessings that flow there from, but this inequality is not of man's origin, it is the Lord's doings."

(Mormon Doctrine, pp. 526-527).

When Mormon 'Apostle' Mark E Petersen spoke on 'Race Problems- As they affect the Church' at the BYU campus in 1954, the following was also said:

"...if the negro accepts the gospel with real, sincere faith, and is really converted, to give him the blessings of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost, he can and will enter the celestial kingdom. He will go there as a servant, but he will get celestial glory."

When Mormon 'Prophet' and second President of the Church, Brigham Young, spoke in 1863 the following was also said:

"Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God is death on the spot. This will always be so."

(Journal of Discourses, Vo. 10, p. 110)
