Five Myths about Mormonism
Washington Post ^ | Aug. 5, 2011 | Joanna Brooks

Posted on 08/06/2011 4:01:34 PM PDT by Colofornian

The campaigns by Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman Jr. for the GOP presidential nomination, along with the popular and profane Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon,” are putting Mormons in the public eye.

SNIP

1. Mormons practice polygamy.

Mainstream Mormons do not practice polygamy today, but it remains part of our history and theology. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon religion, married at least 33 women (often without the consent of his first wife, Emma) and preached that polygamy was divinely sanctioned...

Polygamy remains a source of tension for mainstream Mormons. Mormon public figures routinely play down our polygamous history, saying that only a tiny percentage of 19th-century Mormon families were polygamous. (Historians say it was 20 to 30 percent.) But the LDS Church, which teaches that marriages — or “sealings” — performed in its temples are eternal, has never disavowed elements of Mormon theology suggesting that polygamy will be practiced in heaven. Church policy permits widowed and some divorced men to be sealed for all eternity to more than one wife, while Mormon women may not be sealed to more than one husband...some mainstream LDS Church members anticipate polygamy as part of eternity, while others reject it.

2. Mormons aren’t Christians.

A few weeks ago, an anchor on Fox News stated that Mitt Romney is “obviously not a Christian.”

SNIP

Growing up in California, I frequently heard that I belonged to a cult...Some people will never see Mormons as Christians...

SNIP

4. Mormon women are second-class citizens.

Mormon women are sometimes perceived as voiceless, mindless members of our faith; LDS Church spokespeople portray us as uniformly happy with our situation. Neither perspective is accurate.

SNIP

...We believe in a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother...

5. A Mormon president would blur the line between church and state.

Excerpted portion from the article: Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon religion, married at least 33 women (often without the consent of his first wife, Emma) and preached that polygamy was divinely sanctioned...Polygamy remains a source of tension for mainstream Mormons. Brooks concedes & reveals here much more than Mormons tend to reveal on polygamy:

* Smith's 33 wives (tho she says "often" without his original wife's consent, I'd say that was "always")

* That 20-30% of 19th century Mormons were linked to it...vs. the "tiny %" its apologists have tried to suggest.

* That Mormons still believe polygamy is going on right now in heaven.

* One misstatement is made here by Brooks: Mormon women may not be sealed to more than one husband...

While that's true of living women, "A DECEASED woman may be sealed to ALL men to whom she was legally married during her life.” (p.73) LDS Church, Church Handbook of Instructions, (LDS Church, Salt Lake City, Utah, 1998), page 72-73, “Sealing Policies”)

2 Corinthians 11

12 And what I do I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Look, I just know that if Romney is the nominne, he’s way better than Barack Obama. If people are sitting around obsessing over his Mormonism, it’s a waste of enery and poor strategy. In the mean time, let’s hope we can draft Paul Ryan or Mark Rubio...or both.

Some Mormon apologists actively lie for the Lord. Like the Islamic taqqiya, Mormons do lie for the advancement of the church. See Gordon Hinckley’s interviews with the San Fran Chronicle and Larry King.

Some Mormons aren’t lying; they just don’t know what the church teaches.

What about Romney’s stance on abortion?

Can we forget that?

If he has no value assigned to human life in his mind, How much moral structure has he really? If he ends up being the Republican Candidate, then all the skeptics over all the years were right. It just doesn’t matter!

I really don’t think it will end up that way. I pray that somebody like palin who cares about us and the unborn gets a shot. Otherwise, the noninvested rule, and we are subjected to rule by people who vote by buzzwords and catch phrases.

Romney is a socialist. Electing him will be like pouring gasoline on a fire - just not as fast as Obama is pouring gas on the fire, but still feeding the fire. We need to go back to founding principles and engage the war against the socialist, while there is still an America to fight for. The last great chance for liberty is fading, Mitt doesn't even believe in the hope of liberty. He thinks the state can solve problems, he fails to recognize that the state attempting to solve problems is the problem.

from the article:We Mormons view ourselves as Christians. Many Christian pastors and scholars, however, point to theological technicalities that disqualify us from the mainline tradition.

What the author calls technicalities, I call the essence of the Gospel. In Christianity God becomes man to be a propitiation; Mormons think that men become Gods. Joseph Smith was a false prophet with a fake gospel;

Galatians 1:6-9 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

1. Mormons practice polygamy. It doesn't say ALL Mormons practice polygamy. Are some Mormons polygamists? Then Mormons practice polygamy.

2. Mormons aren’t Christians. True! They are polytheists.

3. Most Mormons are white, English-speaking conservatives. False! Many are white, English-speaking liberals who claim to be conservatives!

Way better for whom? (Not the pre-born)

Way better for whom? (Romney's already been on the Marriott porn payroll as a Marriott board member...so not better for porn addicts; certainly better for the porn industry)

Way better for whom? Socialist bureaucrats implementing all facets of Rom-Obamacare?

Way better for whom? The Mormon church using a Mormon POTUS as a massive PR tool?

Way better for whom? The RINOs (perhaps) permanently taking over the GOP as the conservative leaves it in droves?

Somebody didn’t get the memo????

Office of First President & Living Prophet®:

August 1st, 2011

The message for this month is -

...to stay on our mantra:       We ARE Christians!!

We've been taking a beating on the Internet - especially from those hateful ANTIs on FreeRepublic!

We MUST keep the media constantly informed of those things the world considers christian.
We must NOT allow our MORMONness to show thru, as it has gotten a really bad rap thru history - lord only knows why...
