Skip to comments. Are dinosaurs fossils really that old? [vanity]

I read that carbon dating method is only accurate for up to 30,000 yrs. So how are scientists coming up with millions yrs. old fossils? For all we know dinosaurs died off not millions but 100's of thousands of yrs ago.
You would know because the creation account was written, by Moses, inspired by God. God would obviously Know.
Heard stories similar to that.
Go talk with some of the old hands on the High Plains. You get some interesting stories.
Is that even enough time to fill up all the rivers, lakes and oceans? Or for rocks to erode enough to provide soil for plant life?
Um, the key word is ‘creation’ not filling.
Mountain formation takes 10s of millions of years. Compared to a ~4.6 billion year old Earth, I suppose that's relatively quick.
The fact that even on very tall supposedly billions of year old mountains are found sea shells from recent geological periods should cause the open minded to realize that large movement have occurred in the past.
The tectonic process which raised the mountains is obviously younger (more recent) than the rocks and fossils that make up the mountains, although molten rock is often injected into preexisting rocks during the mountain building process.
An interesting example is the Matterhorn where very old (billion years or so old) rock sits *atop* younger rock, the explanation being that the older rock layers were folded over the younger ones in the tectonic 'collision' which raised the Alps (the ongoing collision between the African Plate and European Plate).
You would know because the creation account was written, by Moses, inspired by God..................................................Because Moses said so, right?
“the explanation being that the older....”
Or perhaps, “The theory being....”
Or “The general consensus being....”
Or “The prevailing winds of thought being.....”
I don’t believe he specified “God Days” or “Earth Days” in the account of events. A day is a relative term when comparing the experience of corporeal beings vs an immortal being like God.
Why would a website have the real answer?
Except that the days are punctuated by dark and light and called out, such as “this was the first day”
I don’t know what you said, but I agree 100%. LOL!
Man goes to God and asks, “What’s a million years to you?”
God answers, “A second.”
Then the man asks God, “What’s a million dollars to you?”
God answers, “A penny.”
Then the man asks God, “Can I have a penny?”
And God answers, “Sure, in a second.”
Surely you jest. Latent memories of dinosaur/human interaction had nothing to do with it? And who is this “Ralph Kramden” that keeps showing up in my serious Flintstone research?!!
Because it was. By your answer, I’ll take it you are not a believing Christian, and as such the Bible is probably just foolishness to you anyway.
He can also create fairies, elves, zombies, space aliens, transformers and real magicians...
“24 hours after God created an adult man, the man appears to be 30 years old even though he was created only 24 hours ago.”
I musta missed the photographs of Adam. Scratching my head as to who took them, though...
I would recommend http://talkorigins.org/origins/faqs-qa.html instead, seeing as it is based on science rather than mythology.
Could, but why is that important when He didn’t?
Right, so He can create Muslims and terrorists too.
He creaeted man, we decide what to do with ourselves. He created you too stuart, why do you mock Him?
“using known decay rates”
I believe a problem with this assumes (and we all know what “ass u me” means) that decay rates have always been constant. We have no idea what decay rates were in the distant past. We just ASSUME they were the same as today.
Stuart (and I) are not mocking God Mr. Gumby. We are mocking YOU.
No, he’s mocking you and unless you’re God I don’t think he as anything to worry about.
Correct, much of it is written by many, some unknown,King James edited it, and shoved down our throats as absolute truth.
Fossil containing sedimentary rock layers are rarely dated directly. Rocks that can be dated via radiometric dating must be either igneous (volcanic) or metamorphic (geologically altered through partial melting and high pressure conditions). Scientists date such rocks above and below the fossil containing layers in order to confine the date of the fossils.
Thats expected, and as usual I’m not disappointed.
But that does not change the truth of the Bible.
Your comments make absolutely no sense.
I won’t argue with you because I know from experience no matter what I say it will not change your opinion. God is minimized when your view of him is limited to a Earth centered viewpoint. I like to think of him being bigger than that. Somehow I doubt he’ll be upset with me if I think more of him than what was written by a man a couple of thousand years ago (with little understanding of time/space).
Next thing you know RoadApple will be claiming the earth was really flat at one point as the early Church believed but made it spherical once the humans got wise to him.
It is held out as truth, I see no throat shoving, though that WILL come in the faith-vacuum being created. The shoving will involve the Koran and you’ll probably wish for better days.
Is it possible that God created the earth “old”? I mean, when He created it, maybe it came chock full of dinosaur bones, fossils, petrified trees, and the whole nine yards... The bottom line is that God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. He created man in His own image and likeness. Man sinned and needed a savior. Jesus came, lived among us, was crucified, died, and rose again to save us. Timelines ? not much to get hung up about. Gods creation is fascinating, though.
I only claim the truth of what God says. No where does it say the earth is flat, so why claim it.
Try sticking to facts.
A wonderfully backwards idea proposed by the Victorian natural historian Philip Henry Gosse in response to the growing evidence from archaeology that the Earth was much older than the 4000 years that were recorded in the Bible.
Gosse’s idea was that God would have created the Earth 4000 years ago with the appearance that it was much older, in fact he would have had to create it that way.
A chicken in the Garden of Eden would have been created whole, but a biologist studying it might infer that it had been hatched from an egg many months before. Those illusory months are prochronic, outside of time, as opposed to the diachronic passing of time the chicken had experienced since its actual creation.
The problem with Gosse’s theory is that it is actually radically skeptical: no evidence could ever overthrow it. In fact, Gosse’s theory was given a strange kind of boost by Bertrand Russell who concluded from arguments of entropy that it is most likely the universe was created a second ago.
Some paleontologists date the rocks where the fossils are found.
Other paleontologists date the fossils where the rocks are found.
Still other paleontologists date Helen Thomas and just asked her.......
Yes let’s stick to facts, you’re a loon.
...all I am trying to say is that faith and science don’t always have to collide.
I thought you would have an answer;)
Perhaps He didn’t do what you think though?
As you said, it’s a matter of faith. Especially since none of it can be proven, and since we both agree that God can do anything, maybe we’re both right, or wrong?
