Time To Admit It: The Church Has Always Been Right On Birth Control
Business Insider ^ | 02/08/12 | Time To Admit It: The Church Has Always Been Right On Birth Control Michael Brendan Dougherty and Pa

EXCERPT:

...let's turn to another aspect of this. The reason our editor thinks Catholics shouldn't be fruitful and multiply doesn't hold up, either. The world's population, he writes, is on an "unsustainable" growth path.

The Population Bureau of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations sees (PDF, h/t Pax Dickinson) the rate of population growth slowing over the next decades and stabilizing around 9 billion in 2050…and holding there until 2300. (And note that the UN, which promotes birth control and abortions around the world, isn't exactly in the be-fruitful-and-multiply camp.)

More broadly, the Malthusian view of population growth has been resilient despite having been proven wrong time and time again and causing lots of unnecessary human suffering. For example, China is headed for a demographic crunch and social dislocation due to its misguided one-child policy.

Human progress is people. Everything that makes life better, from democracy to the economy to the internet to penicillin was either discovered and built by people. More people means more progress. The inventor of the cure for cancer might be someone's fourth children that they decided not to have.

So, just to sum up:

The Left, represented by Zer0, are proving they are amoral and cannot be given the nation’s trust in upholding the Constitution.

This is the most salient point of this thread. The left wants to overturn the constitution, from 0bama to Darth Bader Ginsberg to the occupy organization. They all hate th US and prefer a leftist, socialist nation full of conforming lemmings that they can control.

Are you serious? Do you really mean to start a fight with the Orthodox freepers by posting two articles and telling me to refute them...? No... I won’t. I also won’t post articles quoting Catholic hierarchy and using them to make broad sweeping declarations about what the Roman Catholic Church has “caved” to. I have too much respect for my Catholic brethren (that’s you) who are faithful to our common Holy tradition to do so... So please doctor extend us that same respect.

Okay, that’s so cute I made an extra donation!

(”Find a perfect man on FR” is still my favorite ever, though.)

Thank you very much for the extra donation!

I can resurrect that one for you. It'll have to be tomorrow, though. See you then.

Thanks, no rush!

Honestly yes, I was serious. I was left with the impression from prior exchanges with Orthodox FReepers that yes, indeed, the majority of Orthodox bodies now condone contraception, at least barrier methods. I have been hoping that was not the case but if you’re not willing to point me to evidence to the contrary, I don’t know how I can be disabused of this notion if indeed it is false if the only Orthodox I’ve run across on this forum who insists it is false is unwilling to provide some assistance in substantiating that assertion.

The Church has always been right on birth control

Absolutely. It undermines marriage, therefore civilization.

Are there other names for the ideology of having big families?

Natalism, Quiverfull, Providentialism; what else?

It seems like Southern Baptists and the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod are pretty much the only pro-life Protestant churches left.

“Maybe I shouldn’t quibble. But please list for me what churches, besides the Catholic Church, still tell their faithful to go forth and multiply and NOT contracept?”

Not a Catholic. But maybe other churches should be telling their members that.

St. Catherine of Siena was the 23rd (child in her family).

I'm astonished that, in those pre-sanitation days, any woman had the stamina to bear that many children and survive.

I'm more of the Dave Barry persuasion: "Where did they find the time to conceive that many?"

Cheers!

Yes, it’s very unusual for a couple to have sex 23 times during their marriage.

[Retort deleted]

That wasn't what I meant: and yes, I know that you now have *ten* children; and the Duggars on TV have 19 or 20; but many people find they are just too *tired* from taking care of numbers 1-5 or so.

Hats off to you for your perseverance and discipline...and the inculcation of a knowledge of the classics into them !

Cheers!

Nothing personal - it’s just that the joke about how married women never have sex is one I don’t find at all funny. Where’d the children come from, anyway? Or alternatively, what do they need the “free” contraceptives and sterilization for, then?

(rant off)

Having an up-til-midnight baby, we are, with spews.

Holy Saturday cheers! Have a kitteh!
