(CNSNews.com) - Speaking to a group of Christian clergy at the Easter Prayer Breakfast he hosted at the White House on Wednesday, President Barack Obama referred to Jesus Christ as “a son of God.”

... “And for me, and I’m sure for some of you, it’s also a chance to remember the tremendous sacrifice that led up to that day, and all that Christ endured--not just as a Son of God, but as a human being.”

The Christian faith teaches that Jesus is the only Son of God.

Another Obama "My Muslim Faith" moment?

A friend told me about this article, and I could not find any thread about it here at FR.

Interesting. So if Jesus was a son of God, who were God’s other sons? Dave, Norm, Steve, Tony, Derek, Max, and Lloyd? Have I got them all, or did I forget one of the kids?

Barry, give it up. You’re not doing a very good job of faking Christianity. Just stop. This isn’t fooling anybody.

This looks like a contest between two Mormons. One is a Bishop, and the other doesn’t know that he’s one. Just holds a same belief.

I’m wondering if it isn’t more like the weak argument of “well, we are ALL sons and daughters of God”.

Not just Mormons. Many nonchristians ignore the definite article "the" and interpret the phrase "son of God" as an honorific, like "a really nice guy." A Muslim, for example, would think that "a son of God" was a title indicating that Jesus was a prophet.

But that's the thing. Muslims don't believe He is Son of God at all, since Issa al Masih was only one of the 25 prophets. A very important one, but nothing but a prophet. Mormons believe He is a Son of God. Hence my post.

was the capital G a mistake or did you forget to end the quote before the word God?

Just sayin'... after all it's Obama who's being quoted.

Jesus Is ‘A Son of God’

A Son of God’

How telling

Well, God forbid if Mitt Romney wins the GOP nomination but if he does I surely hope Romney will have a Walter Mondale moment in the debate...

You're right! They always call Issa "the son of Mary." My error for mixing them up with the historian-types wo reinterpret the phrase.

Though I did find one Muslim convert who reinterprets the phrase, the general Muslim opinion is as you say.

Good call. Another Muslim moment. And to think they are going to attack Romney on his Mormonism. Last time I checked, Mormons aren’t hijacking planes or blowing themselves up.

It’s like Obama is the best jihadist they’ve got.

And yet one more "non-difference" between Obama and Romney.

Please remind me again where they differ...

I’ve always thought it to be the other way around - that the sacrifice was much greater because Jesus was God’s son.

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Excellent point.
To Christians, Jesus Christ is THE son of God, His only begotten son, and Jesus of Nazareth, the human being crucified on Calvary was the very same.
Obama doesn’t quite get the concept of the Triune God, the Mormons believe in (at least) three gods and reject the Trinity.
Many similarities between Islam and Mormonism.

Actually, if Obama would claim to be a Hindu, there would be no problem. Hinduism's position is that God taking form in a human body is necessary for humans to reach God - and that because of that, God has taken that form many times throughout history. Not some different God each time, the same, one God.

In Christian terminology, it would like differentiating between Christ as the Son of God who Is God taking a human body named Jesus, and that exact same Christ doing it agin some other time, in another human body, named something else - but still the same Christ, the same Son of God.

Obviously traditional Christianity does not accept this interpretation. But that doesn't mean billions of people for thousands of years haven't accepted it, because they have.

Thing is, as far as I know, I can't recall Obama ever claiming to be a Hindu. : )

Only believers can claim that. Unbelievers are not. So ALL of us are not, that is a blatant lie.

Boy - you would make a lousy, so-called PC and inclusive president where Jesus and Mohammad and all of humankind are all one. And where God sheds a tear when ever a tree is cut down. (Hmmm - I wonder if Obama has invoked “his” Christianity yet on the Global Warming/ Environmental stuff yet. I know he has on the healthcare thing and taxes.

Yeah well, he is not a Christian. He will do his best to play the part to pander to a large voting block. And his speechwriters and advisers will try to feed him with catchy phrases and sound bites which they think should appeal to Christians. But at the end of the day he is a foreigner (to the Kingdom of Christ), and he is speaking in a foreign tongue.

“This is not my personal opinion, it is God’s own words expressed in His book.”

We were just talking about that with some friends about how stating what is the Truth is not always pleasant or what people want to hear - but hey - it is what it is. (For me, I know I don’t want to hear it sometimes, and try to find some wiggle room where there is none).

I wish I could cast dispersion on the use of “A son of God”, but, I heard our minister refer to Mary and Joseph as being homeless...so anything coming out of the mouth of a mainline protestant church minister just makes me laugh...and cry at the same time at what has happened to religion in our country in the past 50 years.

What has happened to Christianity in America in the last 50 years?
WE DO NOT KNOW THE WORD OF GOD!

We could! I would challenge every man and woman in the USA to just read (better yet memorize):

John Chapter one
John chapter three
Romans chapter eight
Hebrews chapters one and two
First John chapter one
First John chapter five

I’m working on it and I just turned 78 last month.

well to be fair, we become children of God by becoming one in Christ, we are not born as children of God..

It sounds muslim to me..Mohamms so called vision was that mankind as individuals can rise to the reality of God, the problem is to God is that he sent his only begotten son to save us, the muslim attitude of deliverance without Christ is salt in the wounds of Jesus...God loves his Son..he has held back his hand until the last soul who is to come home in this age has readied and confessed Christ as Savior , after that it is historical fact that God destroys the chaff and saves the wheat, he will destroy anything that gets between him and Christ, he has said Christ is the only worthy one..what he says creates...peace in Christ..

And you will have several on hand, in your pocket, or purse, car etc.

“Wherewithal[How]shall a young[and old] man [or woman] cleanse their ways? By taking thereto according to Thy word. With my whole heart have I sought Thee: Oh let me not wander from Thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” (Psalm 119:9-11)
