C. S. Lewis also talked about this. He cautioned against loving pets too much. After all, he argued, what’s NOT to love? Those we keep are loyal, they need us, they work freely for us, they don’t gossip, betray, or steal. They’re perpetual innocents. Unlike mankind. There’s no virtue, in other words, in loving such utterly lovable beings. (Wish I could remember where it came from—That Hideous Strength?)

Begging Mr. Lewis' pardon. Many a cat and dog steals freely. The main difference is that the dog betrays his guilt, and the cat keeps his own counsel.

My best cat was a six-month old kitten in the car with me on a trip to McDonald's. I offered him a bite of my cheeseburger. That cat stuck his left claws in the bottom bun, and his right claw in the top, pulling briskly before I even realized what he was up to. The little guy finished the whole burger without even disassembling it--bun, onions, ketchup, mustard, pickle, "cheese" and "meat". I was too busy marveling to stop him...but a thief he was.
