Greg Laurie contrasts 'prosperity preachers' with the troubles of Paul
In April 2008, I began teaching a series in the book of Acts at my church. Little did I know at the time that pretty much in the middle of that series, the greatest tragedy, trauma and shipwreck of my lifetime would take place.
I have had my share of hardships in life more than many, but not as many as some. I had hoped that maybe the big shipwrecks were over. I always knew there would be storms and difficulties in the Christian life, but hopefully no big, traumatic events. I had hoped there would be relatively smooth sailing all the way to heaven. But with the unexpected death of my oldest son, Christopher, that was not to be.

Great article.... can’t stand “prosperity preachers”. We all will experience hardship in our lives and hopefully because of it we will become more dependent on God. God is sovereign, as stated in Job. He’s not the Tooth Fairy.
Thank you - good article!
I know first hand the damage that can be done through this type of mentality...Thank God for His amazing Grace!
Thanks for the title fix! You guys are on top of things!
Wow Greg sure has gone through a lot in his life. I remember when he was a long haired hippie pastor of the little church in Riverside.
He has! Yet, he still remains ...what a testimony.
My earliest rebuttal (back in the 1980’s) to these “prosperity preachers” was “What about the believers in the Communist countries? Those in predominantly Muslim countries? They are being persecuted for not having enough faith? Maybe if they had enough faith they could live like a party apparatchik?”. These preachers must have had Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz Song” as their favorite hymn.
Back then I had a few acquaintances that were involved in Bible smuggling operations.
