Three homosexual professors at the University of Notre Dame are reportedly saying the Catholic university isn’t doing enough to be inclusive to the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community. Recently, the University announced it would not add sexual orientation to its nondiscrimination clause despite pressure from some student groups and faculty.
In protest of that decision, three homosexual professors spoke out in the student newspaper, saying among other things that Notre Dame treats them like “second class citizens” and that other LGBTQ professors have left the university and some students didn’t enroll because of it, despite the administration’s promise to take other steps to help LGBTQ individuals feel more included on campus, according to a report from the student newspaper.
Susan Cannon Harris, an English and Irish Studies Professor, is quoted saying she has not made any effort to conceal her sexuality. She reportedly said she feels safe coming out to students on the first day of each semester and received tenure from the university in 2004.
But Cannon Harris said the absence of sexual orientation from the nondiscrimination clause has a psychological effect on LGBTQ faculty. The Observer reports:
For example, when coming up for tenure, professors typically ask themselves whether they have done enough research or met the standard in the classroom.
“I, because of Notre Dame’s special situation, also had to ask the question, is all of that going to matter? Are they going to deny me tenure just because I’m a lesbian?” she said. “Even though I mostly didn’t think that they would, it was in the back of my mind. And that is very destructive.”
Since Cannon Harris received tenure in 2004, she has had to worry a bit less. She now feels safe telling her students she is a lesbian on the first.........

Completely unprofessional and utterly distasteful. The students have no need to be confronted with their instructor's sexual preferences. If I'm a student, I don't want to know. Just present the course material and get out of my face with the sex.
Hint: “Catholic university” - might give it away that homosexual conduct is frowned upon...

In telling her students the first day of class her sexual orientation, she’s obviously warning them how they must treat her. She’s entitled to extra privileges AND everyone must submit papers that somehow embrace and reflect her ideology. To do anything else would be intolerant and to complain would be hate.
Sorry, but Notre Dame gave up any pretentions of being Catholic years ago.
They’re now just another of the lifeless and clueless secular institutions of no learning. (STEM courses excluded...at least until the PC loons get to them.)

Funny the things you can remember from college classes. I can rerun that one in my mind like a movie. My first thought was "college is different", my second thought was "oh my gawd it's too late to change classes".
What I learned was how to recite or read Spanish in perfectly accented Argentinian standard!

It really is high time to push back. Maybe at personal cost, but we will have only ourselves to blame when sodomy becomes mandatory.
I see no more reason these people should be “accommodated” than if there were a group of non-repentant bank robbers demanding the school “be more inclusive”.

You know that is so true! Never mind that this is a CATHOLIC university but I don’t care what the professor has sex with you are correct the professor does not need to tell me! I have never known a heterosexual professor come in on the first day and say “I am a strait professor” so why do these people feel the need to tell me what they have sexual relations with? Yuck! I don’t need to know.
