Anti-Mormon bias facing Mitt Romney is as strong as what his father faced in 1967, poll shows

Mitt Romney faces an anti-Mormon bias just as strong as the one his father confronted during his own presidential run more than four decades ago, according to a Gallup poll.

Eighteen percent of Americans say that if their political party nominated “a generally well qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon,” they would not vote for that candidate. Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, is a devout Mormon who once presided over the church’s Boston stake.

When Gallup asked the same question in 1967, during George Romney’s bid for the White House, 17 percent of Americans said they would refuse to vote for a Mormon.

“The stability of resistance to a Mormon presidential candidate over the past 45 years is an anomaly, given that resistance to a candidate who is black, a woman or Jewish has declined substantially over the same period of time,” Gallup Poll Editor-in-Chief Frank Newport wrote in a press release announcing the survey results.

The electoral significance of a lingering anti-Mormon bias is unclear because only 57 percent of Americans even know that Romney is a Mormon, according to the poll.

“This suggests the possibility that as Romney’s faith becomes better known this summer and fall, it could become more of a negative factor -- given that those who resist the idea of a Mormon president will in theory become more likely to realize that Romney is a Mormon as the campaign unfolds,” Newport said. “That things will actually work out this way, however, is far from clear.”

Democrats, who are unlikely to vote for Romney anyway, oppose a Mormon president at a much higher rate than Republicans, 24 percent to 10 percent. Opposition among independents stands at 18 percent.

There's been an absolute plethora of articles trying to "play down" the impact of Mitt Romney's Mormonism on this election...especially with the theme of "Evangelicals and other conservatives have nowhere to go but Mitt."

The problem is that this media drumbeat largely ignores Independent voters. Per this article: Mitt Romney faces an anti-Mormon bias just as strong as the one his father confronted during his own presidential run more than four decades ago, according to a Gallup poll. Eighteen percent of Americans say that if their political party nominated “a generally well qualified person for president who happened to be Mormon,” they would not vote for that candidate. Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, is a devout Mormon who once presided over the church’s Boston stake. When Gallup asked the same question in 1967, during George Romney’s bid for the White House, 17 percent of Americans said they would refuse to vote for a Mormon...Democrats, who are unlikely to vote for Romney anyway, oppose a Mormon president at a much higher rate than Republicans, 24 percent to 10 percent. Opposition among independents stands at 18 percent.

Knowing this, the Dems & MSM "ace in the hole" this summer will be to "educate" the 43 percent of voters who still don't know that Romney is a Mormon!

From the article: The electoral significance of a lingering anti-Mormon bias is unclear because only 57 percent of Americans even know that Romney is a Mormon, according to the poll. “This suggests the possibility that as Romney’s faith becomes better known this summer and fall, it could become more of a negative factor -- given that those who resist the idea of a Mormon president will in theory become more likely to realize that Romney is a Mormon as the campaign unfolds,” Newport said.

Of course, this will all result in more non-Mormons becoming apologists for Mormonism; and for blaming those who expose Mormonism -- instead of the GOP-E...who gave us a guy who...
...thinks he's an alien from the Planet Kolob -- having been spirit-born there (something that apparently doesn't bother the birther crowd)...
...thinks that the White House is just a career move toward the Great White Throne as another god in the universe... [see Op-Ed: Mitt Romney's proposed career path — President, then God [White House-->Great White Throne]
...thru age 31, was giving a tithe toward an open racist organization -- the Mormon church!!! (Btw, those racist verses are still there in the three peculiar Mormon "scriptures"...they only changed one of them...in 1981)

This article talks about "anti-Mormon bias"...yet we are all called to discern worldviews. We are concerned about the "ISM" in MormonISM; not simply that somebody has a "Mormon" label. For example, if you are a voter and Romney's corporate worldview bias toward blacks -- his racist ties -- are an issue to you, please research:

* Racist principles were taught to older Mormons such as Professor Randy Bott [Admits Lds columnist] * Thinking Strategically about a Ban Disavowal [Mormon racism re: ban of blacks] Key quote from above article -- from a Mormon non-profit org leader (Kevin Barney): ...if Romney gets the nomination, then we’ll see this issue blow up in such a way that the last few days will seem like a harmless firecracker...

* Racist Remarks by popular BYU Religion Professor Spark Controversy

* Is Mormonism Still Racist? Comments from a BYU professor stir up a troubling past

* BYU Professor makes controversial statements about Blacks & LDS Church * Faith, truth and priesthood restriction (Mormon racism)

Too many MSM articles & its accompanying headlines -- suggest we are to accept ALL religious worldviews equally...lest we be somehow "guilty" of "bias." Yet, we are to favor truth; and refute falsehood, and to do so unapologetically!!!

I don’t agree with the theology of Mormonism. However, Martin Luther once said that he’d rather be ruled by a competent Turk than an incompetent Christian. In this case, I’d rather be led by a competent Mormon, than an incompetent, destructive, culturally Muslim Atheist posing as a Christian.

And for stating your honest opinion you will be told your christianity is in question, that you are insulting God by siding with the enemy, that ... well, you’ll see. Enjoy the show hereafter.

However, Martin Luther once said that he’d rather be ruled by a competent Turk than an incompetent Christian.

(Well, that's funny...MOST Freepers willing to comment on the subject of whether they'd vote for a Muslim POTUS or not -- your "Turk" -- say "no" to that...I wonder why it is that whenever a FREEPER trots out this quote from Luther, that the hundreds of FREEPERs who've indicated they would NOT vote for a Muslim POTUS never contend that quote since it's now being used to support Romney???)

Why don't you take your own informal FREEPER survey and ask how many of them would vote for a "competent" Muslim POTUS...???

All the polls I looked at in 2007-2008 suggested THEN that 50% or more -- perhaps even 60% -- would not vote for a Muslim POTUS. (Not exactly strange in a still "fresh" 9/11 cultural environment)

Even Romney told the Christian Science Monitor in 2007 that he would NOT place a Muslim on his Cabinet!!!
See: Remember when Romney said he wouldn’t put a Muslim in the cabinet? He made his Mormonism relevant

In America we are never forced to vote for Nero or Caligula. We can vote for Constatine even if he won’t win.

Obama and Romneycare are twins on social issues.

The economic collapse of Europe is likely to cause the dollar to fail as well, when the Euro collapses, so nobody we put into office can save our economy at this point. The only way to go forward will be the route Iceland has taken. Thus, no reason to compromise over the rather miniscule economic differences.

I will probably vote for Virgil Goode.

Any moron that would vote against Romney because of his religion given the religion practiced by his opponent deserves what will happen to his country. The rest of us will hate them for selling their country out by being ignorant bigots.Whether you like his record is one thing but you can't point out where Mormonism played any part in it. If Obama plays the Morman card the RNC headed by Priebus and the pacs will make Rev Wright the poster child for Obama. Pribus isn't Steele and Romney is no McCain.

Bingo. Voting for Virgil Goode as well.

Try as people will to make Romney-the-Mormon "god-in-embryo" a messianic-like political savior; he isn't. I can hardly think that God would be pleased to resurrect our economy after voters decided that they would elevate to the highest office a man who says he will compete with God for praise, worship, adoration, glory, reception of prayers, and split sovereignty.

For some reason, the Bible is pretty plain re: the elevation of idolatry and idolaters.

Note to ALL: GOD as Sovereign King of the Universe has more to do with our economy -- than any mere "another god" worshipper like either Romney or Obama!

This story could have been rephrased to show 90% of Republicans would vote for a Mormon and 82% of Independents polled would do likewise. It's all about how the results are spun. Bottom line is that this is a non-story.

IOW, you're intolerant of others' religious views that consider the vulnerability/gullibility-to-deception of a POTUS candidate...
...one who character-wise is audaciously filled with pride to consider himself "divine"...
...And, so, you're Soooooooo intolerant of others' religious views that you're bigoted and self-admittedly "hate[ful]" toward them???

Tell us all again how "anti-MormonISM" = "bigotry"...but somehow anti-anti-MormonISM doesn't constitute "bigotry?"

Is there some "religious hypocrite" license you received that allows YOU only to disdain certain religious views???

IT is up to us in Nov to REMOVE 0, and NOT INSTALL his EVIL TWIN. I don’t drink the gop koolaide, I did a lot of research, there is but a dimes difference in the 2. If it talks like a Republican, votes like a demoRAT, signs legislation that only a demoRAT would sign they it must be a DEMORAT with a R after it’s name called a RINO!

And for every one who moans about Snowe, Graham, Collins and the former Specter this is what you will get if you vote for the RINO Romney.

******

Took the words out of my fingertips! Belief in Mormonism requires assent to a set of propositions that range from merely very dubious (moroni the plates and Joey) to the patently false (ridiculous historical claims about pre-european population of the US) to fantastical nonsense that could’ve come right out of a scifi novel.

It isn’t “bias” to disbelieve fantastical claims and to view an apparently intelligent adult who believes such things with skepticism — its informed judgement.

What derailed George Romney’s presidential hopes was not his Mormonism but his liberalism.
