Holy and righteous are You our Lord God. Worthy of all praise and honor, we come before You both in humility and boldness. It is in humility as we look at ourselves alone, but boldness as we consider that the Greater One indwells us and Jesus’ blood has cleansed us. How we need Your Word to change our thinking!

We pray today again for our beloved American troops. Very simply, Sir, our hearts’ desire is that they be protected, successful and return home born again, filled with Your Spirit and appreciated by the Nation they served. We present this as a petition before You today and thank You for the work You are surely doing to accomplish these things for us.

Choosing to look only at You and Your promises, we pray for rain. According to Your Word, this is the season for the early and latter rain. Let physical and spiritual rain fall on our land to cleanse and refresh us. Let there be an abundance of crops in our fruited plain and an abundance of spiritual fruit from Your Word. Remember us, Your people, and cause us to ”live a quiet and peacable life in godliness and reverence” as we pray for those in authority over us—the just and the unjust. Give them wisdom and understanding, we pray.

Thank You for Your matchless love and care for us. We do love You and bless You in the name of Jesus. Amen.

The Best Things In Life

An old adage says, “The best things in life are free.” There’s a lot of truth in that. Some people, however, believe that the best things in life are expensive or perhaps elusive. Recently I saw a sign that made me smile and think. It said, “The best things in life are not things.” What a great way to say it! The value of family, friends, and faith points us to the realization that what matters most in life is all wrapped up in people and the Lord.

Solomon was well qualified to speak about material things because he “surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom” (1 Kings 10:23). His advice? “Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven” (Prov. 23:4-5). His recommended course of action was, “Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge. . . . For surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off” (vv.12,18).

The best things in life are the eternal riches that come from God’s goodness and grace in Jesus Christ. We do not hold them in our hands, but in our hearts.

Our greatest riches are the riches we have in Christ.

In the coldest and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered those prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting glory and bestowed His manifold benefits upon the new Nation.

In like manner, let our prayers now rise for our heroes in the American military who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and keep them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.
