Nun Sues "Sister Act" Filmmakers for $1 Billion

Harlem nun claims Sister Act is based on her life story

A nun who claims her life story was made into the Whoopi Goldberg movie Sister Act is suing the Walt Disney Company for $1 billion.

TheWrap reports that Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely of New York City's Franciscan Handmaids of Mary Convent in Harlem claims her life story inspired the original film, plus its sequel and the Broadway musical based on the movie.

Sister Act, she claims, used her 'actual life experiences without her permission or authorization, thereby irreparably damaging her by depriving her of the windfall of financial gain reaped by defendants," according to the suit.

"The subplots actualized in the said motion picture Sister Act and portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg are her real life experiences," reads the claim.

Blakely is now suing Disney as well as Touchstone Pictures, which is owned by the studio.

"Queen Mother" Dr. Delois Blakely

If she's a "nun" then I'm the Pope. Not sure who this woman is or how she comes to be called a "Queen Mother" (whatever that is) but she sounds like a grifter. Do not see any mention of her on the website of the Franciscan Handmaids of the Most Pure Heart of Mary in Harlem.

Sister Act came out in 1993. This is just dawning on her now?

Not really. Hollywood has a long tradition of being inspired by true events and then fictionalizing them just enough to avoid paying the people whose true events inspired them. They did this to one-time Judas Priest singer Ripper Owens when they made the Mark Wahlberg film "Rock Star."

She could be telling the truth.

In general, they’re under no obligation to pay people for telling a story based on them.

But, hey, Disney will make this right. She can be a color analyst on NBA broadcasts at ESPN.

I just realised “Animal Crackers” was based on my life. I demand the Marx Brothers reanimate, and pay me some big bux.

I demand that Jon Lovitz stop stealing from my life experiences (Max Louis (Newsradio), Mel Schmegmer (Benchwarmers)) for his acting career. Give me my life back, Jon!

DAVE NELSON: "Do you know how you're talking right now?"
MAX LOUIS: "Yes..."
DAVE NELSON: "That's what I want, right. Just be yourself, nothing more, nothing less. All right?"
MAX LOUIS: "I can't just 'be myself'!"
DAVE NELSON: "Well, you're doing it right now!"
MAX LOUIS: "No I'm not! It's just a character I came up with to help me deal with you!"
DAVE NELSON: "Be yourself - or you're fired."
MAX LOUIS: "I can't."
DAVE NELSON: "Yes, you can."
MAX LOUIS: "No, I can't!"
DAVE NELSON: "Yes, you can!"
MAX LOUIS: "No, I can't! Don't you get it? No one wants to know the real me!"
DAVE NELSON: "Well why not?"
MAX LOUIS: "Because I'm....I'm....weird!"
DAVE NELSON: "Uh...it's okay, Max."
MAX LOUIS: "You know, I worked very hard to conceal my weirdness from the world. And now you want me to just unleash it on everyone?"

My guess is, that after all these years, life is not going well lately for the “Queen Mother”, and her previous “work” and her prior handling of her funds will not provide her with her acustomed standard of living for the rest of her life, so she’ll now see how much of a “settlement” Disney will offer to just make her go away.

One would hope Disney will not make any offer unless there is a strain of truth in the “Queen Mother’s” story.

Really? So why did she wait so long to sue? That movie was made in the 90s, I believe.

Besides, suing for $1B is not exactly nun-like behavior.

Perhaps this nun has simply lost her marbles.

Here is a link to the NYT article

http://tinyurl.com/8ydfyce

From that article,

“Her deep-seated spiritual life was, in fact, first developed at the Convent of the Franciscan Handmaids of Mary on West 124th Street, where she arrived at age 16 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and where she spent 10 years as a nun before leaving to pursue a worldlier vision of things. She moved into a friend’s apartment, found work in a watch factory and then at J. C. Penney’s, experimented with nail polish and permanents, and eventually discovered what it was like to have strange men whistle at the sight of her legs. She said she went on to get a master’s degree from Harvard and a doctorate in education from Columbia.”

So why she is referred to as a nun in the original posted article is beyond me.
