Every one is NOT a child of God.

So, what are they, then? Only God can create all this (especially us), thus each of us is "a child of God", as Osteen put it. One cannot be anything else.

John 8:41-47 41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. 42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? 47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

This is a common misconception of scripture! All people are not sinners. A sinner is a person that is in rebellion to God and from that attitude of rebellion, lives a life of sin!! A saint is a person that lives with an attitude that is in union with God and as a result is always striving to do God’s will. When a saint sin’s is not out of rebellion. It is out of ignorance, weakness and infirmity. The “saint” hates sin and is constantly trying to eradicate it from his/her life! A “saint” is learning to slough off the old carnal man and take on the new Spiritual man that is fashioned after the divine nature of God!! While these efforts in their own right would never earn them a place in heaven, they do meet the qualifications laid out in the Bible to be granted access to that that is truly able and does earn them a place in heaven, and that is the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Please see 1Jn 1:5-9, 2:1-5, 3:4-10 (ESV); Rom 12:1-2; 2Pet1:3-11 for starters. In every case in the NT in which the word “sinner” is used it is in the derogatory sense to describe those that are or were lost and/or in rebellion to God, not those that have truly accepted God and as His disciples strive to live according to His precepts, yet from there ignorance, weakness and infirmity do still sin!!

I agree. Revelation says
And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
I would be very afraid......

Somebody may already have posted this, but can the “daily reflections” of this most repulsive man be deleted from Free Republic? There are some of us who don’t want to see his name every morning when we get on the site.

I do remember John Osteen. He started his church in our neighborhood which was a former feed store. He was a hell and brimstone preacher who obviously was blessed by God as evidenced by the success of his church in growth and membership. I like Joel but he seems to talk about how you can be successful in life.....not how to successfully get into heaven. IMHO.......:)

You said, “Sin is also “to incur guilt, incur penalty””

First, I’m not fan of Osteen and believe he teaches error but I don’t gather from what I’ve read that he’s a “universalist”. When you take issue with Osteen’s definition of sin as to “miss the mark” that’s really unwarranted. Sin is disobedience to God in rebellion and even with the most sincere person it really has to do with “missing the mark”. Thank God for his grace for such sin. But sin is not “to incur guilt, incur penalty”. These are the consequences to sin, not what sin is. Respectfully. Discipler

I agree that the original post is reading too much into Osteen’s remarks. I see Osteen as trying to measure his words so as to appeal to sinners but I haven’t heard him come out and say homosexuals, adulterers and the like don’t have to repent to go to heaven. If he said that he doesn’t talk about sin in his sermons, then that’s ridiculous. The cross of Christ has no context without speaking of the desperate need man has for salvation.

He denied Jesus is the only way. Isn’t that universalism?

It is only "missing the mark" for those who are aiming to obey God. Repentance means to "turn around" and go the other way. Sin is rebellion against God, as you stated. It's not seeking to please God and simply "missing the mark".

In John it clearly states that you are either a child of light or a child of darkness.

I should certainly hope not. The KJV is one of the poorest Bible translations in existence, with over 1,000 errors. We’ve got far better translations available to us, from far earlier manuscripts.

Brought into faith of what? That is what is so sad about what he is doing. He is not leading people to repentance of sin and a saving knowledge of the blood sacrifice of Christ. People are being fooled by this man and his false teachings. He is dangerous.
