Former Archbishop of Cincinnati cited in files
CHICAGO -- As head of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin got credit for instituting reforms and throwing out guilty priests in the midst of a child abuse scandal that covered four decades.
But the former Archbishop of Cincinnati also helped cover up for sexual abusers, according to internal archdiocese documents released Tuesday that show how the archdiocese tried to contain the scandal.
The documents claim that:
> Bernardin not only refused to pursue a canonical trial to remove Rev. Norbert Maday, a convicted child molester, from the priesthood, he increased the priests salary to help him in prison after loaning Maday $100,000 for his criminal defense.
In a 1996 letter to Maday in prison, Bernardin wrote: I have decided I will not seek your dismissal from the clerical state I do not judge that justice and equity would be served by so severe a sanction. You have suffered enough by your present deprivation of ministry and your incarceration.
➢ Bernardin was aware that Rev. John Curran molested children as early as 1990, but Bernardin promised not to disclose his knowledge of any allegations, and Curran continued to have access to children until 1995, when Bernardin ordered Curran to go to treatment. Curran was finally suspended in 1996 because he refused treatment, not because of his abuse.
> A priest who allegedly raped a nun, abused a seminarian and had sexual relationships with married women was allowed to remain a pastor after the vicar for priests told Bernardin that demoting Rev. William J. O'Brien would destroy the priests career and be demoralizing for him.

I'm not sure there is a problem.
I'm simply asking the person that wrote it the same question as you.
If it's a term of endearment I imagine he'll tell us.
LOL! Exactly.
Which reminds me of my favorite joke.
What are the 5 most dangerous things you can hear in the Army?
-The private who says “This is the way we did it in basic.”
-The Sergeant who says “Trust me on this Sir.”
-The L.T. who says “Well based on my experience
“
-The Captain who says “I’ve got a great idea!”
-And lastly the Warrent who says “Hey! Watch what hapens when I do this!”
I’ve explained it usage and given multiple examples.
LOL!
Don’t trust us with a map!
Shameful record of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin!
I’m happy his unconscionable cover-ups have finally been exposed.
I’m very sorry this thread has been hijacked.
Perps and facilitators all belong in jail.
Sounds derogatory to me.
Gamecock,
I may be mistaken about the point you’re trying to make, but you do realize why the term “Roman Catholic” was used, and often is still used, by Catholics in America, right?
It was put on us against our choice by force of law in the UK in the 17th and 18th centuries. It became part of the colloquial way of speaking even though it is not a proper term. Even the Church uses it now because it is so commonly understood - no matter how incorrect it actually is. The title of the Catechism, however, was properly chosen: Catechism of the Catholic Church. Notice it is not “Catechism of the ROMAN Catholic Church.”
“I thought that there was no such thing as *Roman Catholic* that it was just Catholic”
Correct.
“and *Roman Catholic* was a Protestant construct......”
Correct. But, since this is an English speaking Protestant country, “Roman Catholic” has the force of law to it since it is so grounded in 450 year old English Protestant bigotry.
” I also have A LIFE.”
A lot of your life seems to revolve around attacking all things Catholic.
What martyrs.......
They were FORCED into using it?
Not.....
I don’t have the time to attack all things. Just the obvious ones.
“They were FORCED into using it?”
Essentially, yes. See the original edition of the New Oxford Dictionary, vol. 8, page 766.
There have been times when Catholics were outright forced to use the term:
“It notes that in 1901 the English Hierarchy found they would not be permitted to address Edward VII on his accession unless they accepted the label. Cardinal Vaughan finally agreed so long as it was understood that he would clarify its meaning in a later public statement.”
“He made this statement in speech given at Newcastle upon Tyne that September where he told the Faithful,
I would now say to you all, use the term Roman Catholic. Claim it: defend it: be proud of it; but in the true and Catholic sense. As the African Fathers wrote some fourteen centuries ago, To be Roman is to be Catholic, and to be Catholic is to be Roman. But I would also say, Like your English forefathers and your brethren on the Continent, call yourselves habitually and especially when the word Roman is misunderstood simply Catholics, members of the Catholic Church.
The insistence of Anglicans on warping terms for the Catholic Church was so strong that, when they reached Japan, more than 400 years after Catholics first arrived (who were later expelled by the pagans), but before Catholics could register a name with the government, the Anglicans registered under the name “Japanese Holy Catholic Church” (NSKK).
Baloney.
All they need is a backbone.
Nobody held a gun to their heads.
“I dont have the time to attack all things.”
You seem to be trying to make time for it.
“Just the obvious ones.”
That might explain the obvious bigotry.
