How Do we Know the Gospels are Historical?

Among Catholics and atheists, is easy to exchange convinced assertions: “The gospels are 100% God’s holy Word and every bit is historically accurate!” or “The gospels are fairy tales!” However there is a discipline called “Biblical scholarship” in which scholars do some very interesting work determining just which parts of the gospels they think are reliable and which they think are not. Their conclusions are, of course, debated. That’s what scholars do. Their work is fascinating and it is worth taking some time to look at just a smidgen of their methodology and conclusions.

Bible scholars are most interested in trying to determine whether the original gospels record eyewitness accounts, and whether those original versions have been transmitted accurately. To do this scholars consider several factors: 1) authorship and date of composition, 2) intention and genre, 3) gospel sources and oral tradition, 4) textual criticism, 5) historical authenticity of specific sayings and narrative events.

One of the difficult aspects for modern people to understand is just what kind of document the gospels are. Everyone can admit that they are not written as purely historical documents, but neither are they simply fabulous fables, myths, or fairy tales. In continuity with the Old Testament, and consistent with their Jewish origins, we have documents which are presented as history and have plenty of historically verifiable details, but which also have supernatural and otherworldly elements to them

**Man couldn’t have written the Bible even if he wanted to and wouldn’t have even if he could.** But don’t you agree that these Gospel authors did write the Gospels inspired by the Holy Spirit, part of the triune Godhead? Thus, they are partly authored by God, correct? Did St. Paul write his writings solely on his own. No, he too, wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

That WAS the whole point of what I said! Man (of his own accord) couldn't have written the Bible even if he wanted to and wouldn't have written it (like it was written) even if he could. A little clearer now?

Why are you trying to hijack a thread that addresses, “How do we know the Gospels are historical”? Don't you or “Roy” have anything to say about that?

Thank you for your examples of the Messianic prophecies, and your mention of Evidence That Demands a Verdict (I'll have to go buy myself a copy).

“But these have been recorded”

And where would those recordings be?

Is this a trick question?

... or that his mother would be a virgin.

Some folks claim that 'young woman' could replace 'virgin' in the prophecy.

A 'young woman' having a child is no big deal; as they do it all the time.

However; Joseph was so upset about 'something', that he was going to get rid of Mary before the Lord stopped him.

Some people may die for a lie, but NO ONE would die for what they KNOW is a lie.

Well; Joseph Smith did; but he tried REALLY hard not to!

Actually..you are the one in a cult..cult of learned bibleology..denying the power of the holy spirit by using the written words that the holy spirit wrote! Wow. There is a real shallowness to the followers of the apostasy, and they make a pathetic mockery of the real power of Jesus’ over sin..”go and sin no more” he told someone for it to be saved for all to read..and for weak Christians to deny that they really are to never sin any longer after being reborn. Nope..you are the one in a cult..the cult of the apostasy

I’m amazed to see those who profess belief in Jesus Christ reject his words as history. Jesus consistently treats Old Testament historical narratives as straightforward records of fact. He refers to Abel (Luke 11:51), Noah (Matt. 24:37-39; Luke 17:26, 27), Abraham (John 8:56), the institution of circumcision (John 7:22; cf. Gen. 17:10-12; Lev. 12:3), Sodom and Gomorrah (Matt. 10:15; 11:23, 24; Luke 10:12), Lot (Luke 17:28-32), Isaac and Jacob (Matt. 8:11; Luke 13:28), manna (John 6:31, 49, 58), the snake in the desert (John 3: 14), David eating the consecrated bread (Matt. 12:3, 4; Mark 2:25, 26; Luke 6:3, 4), David as a psalm writer (Matt. 22:43; Mark 12:36; Luke 20:42), Solomon (Matt. 6:29; 12:42; Luke 11:31; 12:27), Elijah (Luke 4:25, 26), Elisha (Luke 4:27), Jonah (Matt. 12:39-41; Luke 11:29, 30, 32), and Zechariah (Luke 11:51). The last passage brings out Jesus’ sense of the unity of history and His grasp of its wide sweep. His eye surveys the whole course of history from “the creation of the world” to “this generation.” He repeatedly refers to Moses as the giver of the Law (Matt. 8:4; 19:8; Mark 1:44; 7:10; 10:5; 12:26; Luke 5:14; 20:37; John 5:46; 7:19). He frequently mentions the sufferings of the true prophets (Matt. 5:12; 13:57; 21:34-36; 23:29-37; Mark 6:4 [cf. Luke 4:24; John 4:44]; 12:2-5; Luke 6:23; 11:47-51; 13:34; 20:10-12) and comments on the popularity of the false prophets (Luke 6:26). He sets the stamp of His approval on such significant passages as Genesis 1 and 2 (Matt. 19:4, 5; Mark 10:6-8).

Oh please...the last book of the bible warns that anyone who takes from it, so shall be taken from them in eternity. Clearly, we are meant to rely on the comforter that Jesus sends. Anything else is too dependent on humans and their trying of things. The sad thing is that your type reject the very power of the holy spirit by over emphasizing the bible. Big mistake!

If you knew what you were talking about, then you would show Him the honor and respect due by correctly capitalizing the name of the third person of the Trinity, Holy Spirit.

You don’t get it..the Word is a metaphor for spirit...do you really think that in the beginning of the bible, when referring to Jesus as the word, they meant the written word? Of course not.

Wrong.

YOU don't get it.

The WORD is Christ.

You guys have a false learned salvation from which the real spirit of truth is blocked out. and I already know your response...it is very predictable.

That's because it's the truth based on Scripture.

So if you know it already, why don't you follow it?

Some skeptics have stated that Jesus put himself in the situations so that it would only appear like he was the one prophesied, but that is such a ridiculous notion it's hard to imagine it answers the many questions that would arise.

That is so ludicrous....

Why would someone put themselves in the position to be CRUCIFIED to death?

If you're looking to be a messiah and savior, you don't go dying a horrible death like that. Cause once you're dead, it's all over.

Unless, of course, you really DO rise from the dead.

And then if that happens, then you weren't a fake anyway.
