Psalm 42

New International Version (NIV)

1 As the deer pants for streams of water,
    so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
    When can I go and meet with God?
3 My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember
    as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
    under the protection of the Mighty One
with shouts of joy and praise
    among the festive throng.

5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

6 My soul is downcast within me;
    therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
    the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

7 Deep calls to deep
    in the roar of your waterfalls;

    at night his song is with me—
    a prayer to the God of my life.

9 I say to God my Rock,
    “Why have you forgotten me?

    “Where is your God?”

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Psalmist compares so many things to water in this wonderful song! The thirst of a wild deer searching for water is compared to his desperate search for God, Tears of frustration and repentance, troubles overwhelming like a waterfall, and the depth of satisfaction in finally making the connection.

Although Belief in the One True God is the result of God's Revelation and dependent upon His Grace, it seems to me that humans have a deep, unsatisfied need to worship. Unfortunately, this need is usually directed to the wrong "god", and every culture has "idols". The very first of the Ten Commandments teaches us that we are NOT to go after other "gods", even though it seems to be in our nature to do so. However, this frustration and dilemma is not impossible, as God has given us HIMSELF, Who transcends any and all other "gods" we can dream up. Joy, unspeakable and full of glory, await those who put their trust in Him.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
