Marriage Is Not Priority for Millennials, Study Says

While only about 18 percent of Gen X women were married by 40, the number of their Millennial counterparts waiting till age 40 to tie the knot could now almost double, according to a recent study.

Using data from the American Community Survey to estimate age-specific marriage rates, Washington, D.C.-based Urban Institute finds that the percentage of Millennials marrying by age 40 will fall lower than for any previous generation of Americans, even in a scenario where marriage rates recover considerably.

In the early millennium period, from 2000 to 2004, the peak first marriage rate for single U.S.-born women at each year of age from 20 to 40 was .099. This indicated that among never-married single women age 25 in that period, just under 10 percent would have married a year later at age 26, says the study titled, "Fewer Marriages, More Divergence: Marriage Projections for Millennials to Age 40."

From 2004 to 2008, the immediate prerecession period, the peak rate was .088, and in the recession-and-after period, from 2008 to 2012, the peak rate further came down to .075, according to the study.

During the Great Recession, the marriage rate fell because many young adults struggled to get their first jobs and many others were laid off.

If the post-recession marriage rate remains unchanged, only 69.3 percent of women will tie the knot until they reach the age of 40, the study estimates. And if the marriage rate returns to the prerecession levels, it will increase only to 76.8 percent, it adds. Among men, the rates projected are 65 percent and 72.6 percent, respectively.

In any case, the rates will be lower than those among Gen Xers, as about 82 percent of Gen X women and 76.6 percent of Gen X men were married by 40.

Another part of our precious American heritage that nobama has screwed over.

Yep I heard about getting the milk for free.

Definitely in this day and ages, very few men are getting married in order to have sex intimacy in their lives.

Tortured statistic, I think. About half of Gen Xers aren't 40 yet.

If they define Gen X from 1960-1980 or 1965-1985 (one of which makes me Gen X), then some (possibly half?) of them haven't even hit the milestone yet.

...”I’m not going to blame the kids for this one — older generations set the stage for the destruction of marriage as an institution. If we want to know why an 18 year old doesn’t think he or she needs to get married, us older Americans need to look in the mirror.”...

Too many of them have experienced the pain of divorce through their own parents.

Yep I heard about getting the milk for free.

That's when she told me a story 'bout free milk and a cow
And said, "No huggy, no kissy, until I get a Wedding Vow"

My honey, my baby, don't put my love upon no shelf
She said, "Don't hand me no lines, and keep your hands to yourself"

Why should they buy the cow when the get the milk for free?

Once the cow has been purchased, the cost of milk grows exponentially, while the quantity of milk dissipates.

I can’t disagree with these kids either. This is another result of government interference. When they amended the laws for unreconcilable differences it enabled anyone to file for divorce basically just because they wanted to. This is one of several reasons for the decline in marriages. Why would a kid, especially a man, want to get married, work to get ahead, invest in life and then lose it all because one partner just decides they don’t want to be married anymore? Then you are dealing with a corrupt court system, attorneys fleecing you for 10’s of thousands, alimony and support payments, etc. I’m not excusing it and I’m not saying marriage isn’t work, but the fact is that the government has made it too easy to get divorced and has provided an economic disincentive to do so. And yes I am divorced and quite honestly have no desire to ever do it again. And my teenage kids are already saying they have no desire to ever get married. I wonder why?

Right. Free love, no fault “quickie” divorces, living together, a 50% divorce rate, etc. were all pioneered in the 60s and 70s. These Millennial kids grew up with parents and a society that didn’t take marriage seriously. Add all the government benes that come with being single — all provided courtesy of older generations — and you wonder why a Millennial would see value in marriage. I wish they would, but the comments here that criticize them for not wanting to get married are misplaced.

I married for the first (and ONLY) time at 38. I had always said that if I had to wait until I was 60 to find the right man it would be worth it. Thank the Lord I didn't have to wait that long and I count myself truly blessed to be married to a such a wonderful, kind and caring man 23 years and counting. My parents divorced when I was 14 and I think, as divorce becomes more and more common today, young people will think long and hard before committing to marriage - which is as it should be.

Now, if only they wait until marriage to have sex, they would be even smarter and save themselves a world of hurt.

re: Why should they buy the cow when the get the milk for free?

That is the first thought that came to my mind as well. Most couples are living together these days without getting married. Some of the arrangements end in marriage, but the majority of them end, and the individuals move on to the next arrangement. Among certain segments of the population, such as in the Black community, the majority of them will never get married. Currently, only 26% of black women are married.

“..but they have friends who don’t, and they’ve observed some brutal divorces among my less fortunate friends.”

I went to a seminar about kids and teens. The guy had studies of how when asked to draw a picture of their family, even kids that had intact families would draw them as being seperated/divorced. He said that the poor examples in society are so ingrained.

The seminar was about how long adolescent development takes now - with many men being in their late 20’s to get out of it. He related it to the lack of “tribal awareness”. Back in the old days one “knew” who they were at a very young age, and once you reached sexual maturity (e.g. first menstration) one was a woman.

Today with all of the various, divergent views placed on us by our culture in the media, mixed populations, etc., knowing “who” you are has become more difficult and the time has been extended. (”Marriage!? I’m still trying to figure out if I’m gay or not!”)

It is no surprise that if you don’t know who you are, it will be tough to find the perfect mate for you. And some never get either figured out.

I tell both my kids, boy and girl, don't bother. Not because I do not believe in marriage, I do. I don't believe in the caliber of people in their generation. Hell, my generation is questionable. (genX, too).

I see men my age (40s) just frikking lost. I'd say more women than men have it together at this age but both are forever chasing some elusive state of "happiness".

I can not even imagine what it'll be like by the time they are forty. (teens now)

I have heard people much older than these Millenials opine that once we’ve opened up marriage to same-sex couples, marriage is now meaningless anyway.

This article doesn’t make any sense.

“While only about 18 percent of Gen X women were married by 40, the number of their Millennial counterparts waiting till age 40”

“In any case, the rates will be lower than those among Gen Xers, as about 82 percent of Gen X women and 76.6 percent of Gen X men were married by 40.”
