The Gospel For Mormons Who Reject It

A review of Starting at the Finish Line by John B. Wallace, a devout Mormon who ended up getting “burned out” by Mormon doctrine and practice.

Written by Shane Lems | Wednesday, July 30, 2014

The bulk of the book really talks about grace – the fact that Jesus came into the world to die for wicked sinners and give them the gift of eternal salvation by faith alone (not by works). Time and time again Wallace explains how he was very works oriented in the Mormon religion. He shows many quotes and examples of how the Mormon understanding of the gospel is very much at odds with the historic, biblical Christian teaching of free and full forgiveness in Christ alone by God’s grace alone through faith alone. The gospel of free grace is a stumbling block for Mormons, and Wallace wrestles with that point in an excellent way throughout the book.

You’ve probably heard the polls that Mormonism is a fast growing religion in the United States (although the polls don’t say how many are leaving the Mormon ranks). You’ve probably seen and/or talked to those well dressed, polite Mormon missionaries. But you may not have read an account by a man who was a “by-the-book” Mormon for 20 years only to leave Mormonism because of its inconsistencies and because of its emphasis on good works for salvation. This book, Starting at the Finish Line, was written by a man who has that story: John B. Wallace. He was in many ways a devout Mormon who ended up getting “burned out” by Mormon doctrine and practice.

Hello all.

I saw this essay over the weekend. To all Mormon readers, did you know that salvation from sin and from eternal burning hell is absolutely, totally FREE?

You don't need to earn salvation.

You, indeed, CAN'T earn it.

Jesus' gift of salvation to you is a free offer from Him to you.

My Daddy was in the Navy. He told me that the sailors during World War II always liked going out with the girls who were saved whenever the ships docked at port. Wonder why that was.

My dad was Navy too. He married a saved girl. That saved girl took God seriously her whole life, shared the Gospel with everyone she could, up to her dying day. I think very highly of saved girls.

An anecdote without the ability to verify, with the intent of doing damage to a reputation.

The motivation for the true Christian to do works is love (John 14:21-23), born out of a gratefulness that God first loved us while we were still sinners (1Jo 4:19).

It's not because we must earn our salvation (Eph 2:8-9) for we have already passed from death to life (Jhn 5:24) or because we fear judgment for there is no condemnation for those who trust Christ (Jhn 3:18, Rom 8:1).

My Dad was Army (1st SGT, South Pacific) and married a saved girl, also. She and devout her family got him saved and they lived happily in the Lord ever after (except for the typical challenges of life).

He died last year at 94 at complete peace as to his own departure.

“Mormonism is a fast growing religion in the United States”

Ya, there is a numbers game being played here. They count their children as new members.

Misleading? Ya, I think so. But that is typical with mormons.

I dated a Mormon girl about 43 years ago. Her Missionary was great! Her Lilith was better!

Then I found she kept all the boys in the Mormon church very happy!

Real classy way to describe a guy who put his life on the line so you could lob stink bombs from the comfort of your Mommy's basement.

FWIW, he never participated in these sexcapades, just passed along what other sailors said.
