Iraqi Christians Weigh Taking Up Arms Against the Islamic State
National Geographic ^ | August 27, 2014 | Rania Abouzeid

DAHUK, Iraq—Of all the many ancient peoples who once lived in the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates, Iraq's Assyrian Christians pride themselves on having persisted in their traditional homeland for millennia, even as other civilizations thrived then disappeared, as languages and cultures died out, as ethnic groups melted into the ways and genetic pools of their conquerors.

But today Iraq's Assyrians, and its Christians in general, fear that their place in this multiethnic, multisectarian mosaic society is shrinking, under severe threat from the ultraconservative Islamist group the Islamic State (IS).

It isn't the first time that Iraq's Christians have faced such a foe. The IS's earlier incarnation, al Qaeda in Iraq—a group that formed after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003—also menaced Christians, and others, prompting tens of thousands to flee into exile.

Now, the particularly harsh nature of the IS's assault on Christians, Yazidis, Shiite Muslims, and others who do not share allegiance to the IS's brand of ultraconservative Sunni Islam has led some of Iraq's Christians to take the unusual step of shedding their historical passivity and consider taking up arms to defend and eventually govern themselves....

Do it, but you won’t get any help from the current US administration.

I think the the death of all ISIS members is duly warranted given their goals and the heinous acts they have committed. I know this may upset the Prez but it is what it is. Time to organize and lay military stategy. Kill their top generals first nd watch them scatter like illegals at a border crossing when the Mexican police show up....: )

I suspect you forgot the /s tag, but for those who don’t know, Jesus was talking about insults, not existential threats.

I wonder what Obama Admin would say if groups of private American citizens started raising money to buy weapons for them, or shipped them weapons directly - kind of like the various “aid” organizations in EU, Turkey or M.E. do for Hamas or Hezbollah?

Christian pacifism only gets Christians killed. I'm darn near a pariah at my Methodist church among the old folk that believe that firearms other than for squirrel, deer, or duck should be illegal.

When my pastor asked me for a physical security plan for the church, daycare, and after school care, I told him first and formost, identify those willing, capable, and able to carry a firearm and get them armed and trained RFN. He said the UMC would not go for arming employees.

It is time for Christians to shed it's naive pacifism and return to the sword that Jesus told us to buy.

When Jesus comes again, he'll be carrying a sword and won't be riding a dove or lamb. Revelations tells us Christ will be riding a white horse and will bring war, not peace.

There are going up against a well armed and financed enemy. They better take a crash course in guerrilla warfare because there’s no way they could take them head on.

The problem is that the well armed army isn’t a well trained one. They run around in black clothes in the Iraqi desert, shouldn’t be hard to nail them if you have cover.
