Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Here is one of those Bible Jobs that we would now consider "obsolete". The closest thing to this profession we would have today would be a Military Assistant, or "Aide De Camp".

Yet, from the context, it would seem that the lowly armor bearer was more than just a shield-carrier. In Jonathan's case, the servant seems to be an adviser, an encourager, and a trusted friend. In the other two instances, the armor carrier is asked to dispatch the master, to avoid humiliation! Saul's armor carrier couldn't do it. Although the KJV says he was "sore afraid", other translations hint that that the servant not only feared his master, but loved him too.

How difficult it would be to kill your master and especially if the master was loved by his servant (Saul's armor bearer)..

It was important to Jonathan to die well. He fell on his own sword first simply to have a quick death of his own choosing. My sympathies are with the armor bearer. Heavenly Father we pray for the peace of Israel, Jerusalem, for the Jewish people, and all seeking to serve Thee LORD, in Jesus name, amen.
