Pope Francis, "If Mary is not your Mother, you are an orphan!"
Charisma News ^ | 9/5/2014 | Jennifer LeClaire

Pope Francis has been a breath of fresh air for many Catholics seeking greater liberty and a growing concern for conservative Christians who take issue with his comments about homosexuality and other cultural issues.

But the pontiff's latest statement is sparking an uproar from believers around the world. Pope Francis sent a tweet Tuesday that absolutely violates the truth of Scripture:

"The Christian who does not feel that the Virgin Mary is his or her mother is an orphan," Pope Francis tweeted.

As of the time I wrote this column it had been retweeted about 4,000 times and many of the responses were in appropriately unkind. It's not appropriate to attack the pope for his beliefs. It's more appropriate to share the truth...

Where in the Bible? In Psalm 103 we pray, “Bless the Lord, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, hearkening to the voice of his word! Bless the Lord, all his hosts, his ministers that do his will!” Psalms 148 we pray, “Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his host!”

In Rev. 5:8 the saints in heaven offer to God the prayers of the saints on earth. In Rev. 8:3–4, the angels do the same thing. In Matt. 18:10, Jesus spoke of the angels ability to intercede for the children to God. One more, James 5:16 where he speaks of the prayers of the righteous. Those in heaven before us are righteous.

I can give you examples of the early Church Fathers, too, that show their belief in prayers to those in Heaven as early as 50 years after Jesus’ death. I’m sure that this will only get us back to the same disagreement as to the interpretation of Scriptures. And I know it is just us Catholics that read the Church Fathers and follow the Tradition handed down but it helps me to see what those that lived so close to the time of Christ on earth believed. It just strengthens my faith as I read the bible and compare it to the lives of the saints.

Catholics worship Mary. That has been debunked time and again and denied by virtually every Catholic on this board, and yet, just like an urban legend, it keeps being spread around non-Catholic circles as if it were true.

I have never seen it debunked...In fact, it can't be debunked...It can only be denied by you guys...

The actions involved in your adoration of Mary match exactly any dictionary definition of 'worship'...That's how we know it is worship...

You can't get away with inventing your own dictionary...

Just the simple admission that the protestant reformation was due to "leadership problems" in the Church and not issues of doctrine or truth.

Though this may be what RCs tell themselves so they can sleep at night, don't expect Elsie or any other knowledgeable Christian to admit to such a blatant falsehood.

So, protestants forsake the Truth to get their guy in power. Congratulations. Hope it was worth it. 500 years later and you've lost Europe to the Muslim horde. What they couldn't do through force of arms they were able to do because of protestant weakness.

LOL! You must be joking! What "guy" is it you imagine Protestants wanted to get in power?

This desperational tactic of now blaming "Protestants" for the Islamists hordes is laughable. With every post you make like this, you are repelling people from your religion not attracting them.

LOL. I know what art I like and that is that. I have seen beautiful art over the years. If someone else does not like the same, that is their business. I am not going to go nuts because they have different tastes..

That’s a sweet story! I would have told him, as I tell my own, that it was His death on that cross that saved us. I’m sorry about your mother. You can continue to pray for her soul. God Bless you!

If Jesus didn't come up off that Cross, none of us are going to heaven...That's why the empty Cross is so important...He Is Risen...

If you loved and respected Mary as much as Jesus did/does, you’d see the dishonor straight away. I don’t know what to say regarding the fact you can’t see it.

Veneration: : respect or awe inspired by the dignity, wisdom, dedication, or talent of a person

Honor: to show admiration for (someone or something) in a public way

Adoration: strong feelings of love or admiration

Worship: to show respect and love for God especially by praying, having religious services, etc.

Sorry. I just don’t see the problem here. I’m guessing because we ask Mary to intercede for us (see previously listed biblical examples of this) that you would consider this worship. You would be mistaken. God alone is worthy of worship. Catholics know this. We also know how to respect and honor those that have gone before us that are worthy of veneration. I’ll say it again. Catholics do not worship Mary.

Have to add an asterisk to my last comment.

*NO ONE can love and respect Mary as much as Jesus did/does. But as Catholics we try to emulate him.

>>as much as Jesus did/does,<<

Matthew 12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? 49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

I read other books besides the bible. It’s a book. It’s a good book. But it’s not the only book.

But it IS the only book all Christians believe is Divinely-inspired, God-breathed sacred Scripture. There is no other book that compares. The Bible alone is able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Only the Bible is 100% accurate in prophecy - in fact, it was one of the ways God told His people they could tell the difference between the truth and false prophets. What other book can say for whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through patience and through encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope? What other book is called the "sword of the Spirit" which is the ONLY offensive piece of the full armor of God? What other book can say that it is ALL God-breathed, useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work?

I think many people err because they think so little of the Bible.

You can either revere Bob Ross or Michelangelo. It’s your pick, not mine.

Yes, just as important as His suffering and death ON the cross. There is nothing wrong with remembering both. I never said the empty cross wasn’t important. This was directed to a specific comment about why we still show Jesus on the cross. Because it was a significant moment. It does not take away the importance of Him rising rising from the dead.

In a similar manner, my love for Mary does not in any way take love away from Jesus. It is entirely possible to do both.

From today's Gospel:
"Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home." (John 19:26-27).
Jesus said this right before he died. In this exchange, the tradition has long taught, He also entrusted all of us to her maternal care.

Michelangelo knows what God looks like? He knows what Jesus looked like. Did he ever see the apostles? All made up images. Fakes.

>>the tradition has long taught,<<

Another one of those made up beliefs.

Galatians 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

If the apostles didn't teach it.

Yeah, that Michelangelo was a fraud and a fake - some foolish American evangelical said that in 2014. Why don’t you write an art history book with all your knowledge?

Why is that; my dear? . . .

I was watching a show months ago. On it the man prayed to Michael instead of Jesus. I have heard others praying to him, too.
