Where Fundamentalists Are Right: 5 Things Catholics Need to Take Seriously Again
ChurchPOP ^ | 2014 | Brantly Millegan

The term “fundamentalist” is a pejorative term today, used to label someone the speaker believes is an irrational religious extremist of some kind.

But a hundred years ago, the term was taken as a badge of honor by theologically conservative Protestants to distinguish themselves from liberal Protestantism. While liberal Protestants in mainline denominations were denying basic Christian teachings like the authority of the Bible and the bodily resurrection of Jesus, conservative Protestants called for going back to the “fundamentals” of the faith – hence the term.

There are obviously a lot of issues on which Catholics and fundamentalists disagree, but there are a few important issues for which fundamentalists take a lot of heat in our culture that Catholics actually agree with them on – or at least are supposed to. Unfortunately, in my experience many Catholics – afraid to have themselves labeled a “fundamentalist” – can throw the baby out with the bath water and end up denying beliefs espoused by fundamentalists that are also taught by the Catholic Church.

Here are 5 things that are already present in the Catholic faith, but that Catholics could learn from their fundamentalist brothers and sisters to take more seriously:

While looking for INSULTS; I found...

Experience shows that the Holy Spirit comes upon people only infrequently, and that only on rare individuals.

Take it up with God, if you don’t like it, because that’s Who I got it from.

Thanks, dear. I appreciate them. Yeah, I think some people on here get up on the wrong side of the bed every morning. I sure would not want them as neighbors. That’s ok. I have put up with worse. : ). My faith is strong. It has to be after losing my younger daughter years ago and then losing 4 other close relatives within 3 years. God is in control. He is the answer!

“Experience shows that the Holy Spirit comes upon people only infrequently, and that only on rare individuals.”

You consider *that* to be an insult?

I’m going to bookmark that one.

“I do not think she is CATHOLIC.”

No, and yet she acted as she did.

That would give an intelligent and/or wise person pause for thought.

As Benjamin Franklin wrote, “...for having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information or fuller consideration to change opinions even on important subjects which I once thought right but found to be otherwise...”

Ol’ Ben was wise there.

I wonder if anyone will take it to heart.

“I wonder if anyone will take it to heart.”

I already did. My opinions on most issues have come around 180 degrees since I was in college. And don’t forget I was baptized a Southern Baptist at the age of 12.

To paraphrase...I don’t know; somebody...my problem with Protestantism is that there just isn’t enough “there” there. Oh, and the hatred that many display toward Catholicism, of course. I don’t think that is good.

Well; there is HIGH church and there is LOW church.

Many care for the ritual and pomp and others do not.

Smells and Bells is the derisive term I think.

Holy Rollers come in at the opposite end of the spectrum.

You've a valid point; but remember; this is a TWO way street.

And don’t forget I was baptized a Southern Baptist at the age of 12.

I didn't forget: I didn't know.

I was saved in a Baptist church in Moses Lake, Washington. I don't think it was a Southern type (They tend to let you know they're the Biggest bunch! ;^)

When I was stationed in Bangkok, I attended a SB church there.

Coming home, no church experience here, I failed to start going - big mistake!

I messed up two marriages and finally the Hound had me again.

I attended a nearby Wesleyan church (Wesleyan? Never heard of them! they might be WEIRD!!!)

Sho nuff; they wuz! Took me in, with my faults, and have been working on me ever since!

Actually not. I don’t hate protestants, nor do I know anyone who does—except this radical atheist who also hates me for fearing God.

I love smells and bells, but that isn’t what I was talking about. I was talking about the intellectual sphere, the ability to provide answers that are not only true, but intellectually satisfying to intelligent, philosophically sophisticated adults.

Catholic thought is like that warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Arc, except that everything in it is accessible.

Tell me more.

It takes a while for this high level of discourse to enter and retain in my hick and rube skull; since mostly 5th grade thoughts are there now.

Ok then...

#103   Experience shows that the Holy Spirit comes upon people only infrequently, and that only on rare individuals.   If you think the Holy Spirit is helping you understand what you read, and you have not had an earth-shattering, entirely unique, draining, and unmistakable supernatural experience, you are mistaken.

#105   While the congenitally hysterical see proof of anything they like, wherever they look

#106   The difference between those people and educated Catholics is that the latter are capable of applying both reason and faith to the solution of the problems that God poses to us, for our edification.

#132   Blah, blah.

#134   Yes, get back to me when you start understanding them.

#138   Similarly, we sometimes see people of mediocre ability thinking that they have prevailed in a debate, entirely because they fail to understand the arguments, or are too closed-minded to give them legitimate consideration. No one on FR, of course, but some people.

#139   Clinging to assumptions where one has no experience is risky at best.

#181   Apparently it is you who have no clue as to what I said.

#182   I’ll answer to God for my lack of charity, but it’s like trying to teach table manners to howler monkeys.

#195   I think a person should actually try to understand what has been said *before* they embark upon character assassination.

#215   Maybe that has something to do with your practice of accusing people of writing that which they didn’t.

#217   If you can’t converse rationally, then leave me alone.

Who is the father of lies?

Eliminate the remarks that were not directed at you, then we will eliminate the remarks that cannot reasonably be seen as insulting, then we will see if we have anything left over.
