Satan at His Most Subtle: A Reflection on the Temptations and Traps of the Pious

By: Msgr. Charles Pope

devil preacher

What is temptation? Temptation is the work of Satan to drag you to Hell. And Satan can read you like a book and play you like piano. Do not exaggerate his power, but do not underestimate it either.

Some of his subtlest work is done in the area of religious observance. There, he can cloak himself quite easily in the lamb’s clothing of piety, but, wolf that he really is, distort it, either through excess or defect, thereby destroying you with what is good. Beware what some spiritual writers call the “traps of the pious.” Consider some examples:

Well, you see, in a certain sense, any virtue will do. Satan can make use of any of them and will seek to corrupt all of them, even the religious ones. He will just as surely go to work in the life of someone in a church pew, as in a brothel or the gutter. No one is exempt from his work of temptation; his goal is to drag us to Hell.

What makes his work of corrupting virtue so insidious is the subtlety of his work, for he takes something that is intrinsically good and seeks to corrupt it, either by excess or defect, or to turn it into some sort of caricature of itself.

Virtues, of course, are meant to work in combination with other virtues that balance them. For example, charity should be balanced by truth and truth by charity. Without charity, the truth can bludgeon; without truth, charity can become harmful, patronizing, and wickedly affirming. Charity and truth are meant to balance each other and to work alongside other virtues in a delicate interplay.

One of Satan’s tactics is to take one virtue and isolate it from others. Beware of these subtle tactics of Satan, who disguises himself well in the robes of virtue. But they are detached virtues, virtues out of balance and proportion.

Beware the traps of the pious.

The early Church, that would be the CATHOLIC CHURCH, the one founded by our blessed Savior Jesus Christ, canonized Scripture and published all 73 books of the bible, proclaiming it the inerrant Word of God. Pretty hard to be outside the CATHOLIC CHURCH if one reads the bible no matter the bashing and ridicule.

"What else do you believe about Catholics? That we’re a bunch of drunks & our priests are perverts?"

Well, my FRiend, if the RCC were other than a cult-like organization, it would read the Bible carefully and notice there is no absolution of sin, there is no purgatory, there is no indulgence, there is no sacerdotalism, there is no Mariolatry, there is no pope (and certainly no unbroken line), there are no seven sacraments, there are no gold lined cathedrals, there is no penance, there is no celibacy, and a dozen other spurious doctrines...none of which teach grace, alone, through faith in Jesus. But, honestly, yes, there are an awful lot of perverts among the so-called priesthood.

A lot of people say Catholics worship Mary, and the saints, but they usually only are parroting whatever preacher boy they hitched their wagon to, or they are “smarter” than the Catholics who tell them Whom they actually worship. For some, the main part of Christianity is running around telling people what other Christians actually believe,

Doesn't this nail the liberal welfare hype of so many Dems...

"Satan can take the beautiful love for the poor and corrupt it into an enslaving paternalism that locks them into dependency, or does not address their spiritual needs by speaking to them respectfully of their sins, or does not seek to deepen their spiritual and family lives. And thus the beautiful corporal works of mercy are either set at odds with the spiritual works of mercy or are considered adequate in themselves. Satan can send many to serve the poor, armed with half-truths and approaches that merely bandage deeper wounds without addressing them."

You beat me to it. Amen to that.

Believe what you will, however, your statements are not straight about Catholicism.

I recommend you look up Dr. Scott Hahn, or go to Catholic.com, and you will find all of the Scriptural references.

While you may not agree with them, they are there.

I am not believing what I will...these are doctrines which are not biblical. Your organization promotes errant theology and we are trying to keep the readership here informed about this problem. If you can find any of them in Scripture, feel free to rebut my post.

As I suspected...no rebuttal. Would you care to hear the real Gospel of Jesus Christ or do you want to continue to hold the traditions of Rome?

You don’t know anything about Catholics or the Catholic Church.

"You don’t know anything about Catholics or the Catholic Church."

I know a lot about good, sound biblical theology and I know that the RCC does not comport with such. If you would like to let us know where in Scripture any of the errant doctrines I mentioned are actually taught, I am interested.

I’m retired now, but he reminds me of a couple of my coworkers who thought their names were Calvin & Zwingli, since they were trying so hard to `convert me to Christianity’.

I teased them with my shop calendar that had images of the Madonna & Child, proof of Mariolatry, but all I had to do to really send them into orbit was mention Jesus’ first miracle at the wedding feast at Cana. “He turned water into grape juice!!!” was the fevered response.

The remarks by the chief steward about wasting the best wine on inebriated guests didn’t help, either.

;^)

>>We only worship<<

Worship - extravagant respect or admiration for or devotion to an object of esteem

Worship - to show profound religious devotion and respect to; adore or venerate

venerate - to regard or treat with reverence; revere.
( Latin venerātus, past participle of venerārī to solicit the goodwill of (a god), worship, revere;)

I would say your author knows little to nothing about Satan...Or, he knows him far too well...

Satan isn't interested in those things you posted...Satan has one goal and it isn't to turn you from religion...

His goal is to make you follow him...Satan doesn't hang around in bars and taverns, or drug houses...Satan hangs out at a church...His goal is to be the perfect counterfeit of Jesus Christ...He wants you to be so religious and pious you can't stand it...

2Co 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2Co 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Satan's ministers are priests...

Pious much? Interesting that Catholics always seem to forget that God used Judas, Balaam's donkey, and many evil people to promote His will. Catholics should keep in mind the Christ retained Judas as an apostle even though He knew Judas would betray Him.

Attempt to read minds much? He probably knows more about it then most Catholics. For instance, did you know that the Catholic Church admits that it includes Babylonian paganism in it's beliefs and rituals?

“Satan can take religious zeal and corrupt it into harsh and uncharitable zealotry. He can take a love for the beauty of the Liturgy, ancient or new, and turn it into a persnickety insistence on exactly the right ingredients, at the expense of charity and at the cost of ridicule, false superiority, and disunity. And thus, charity thrust aside, we say, “Just make sure you celebrate the liturgy the way I like it. Anyone who doesn’t like what I like is antiquarian, a knave, or an uncouth troglodyte and must obviously hate the Church that I love so beautifully …””

It is THIS that gives me pause to comment on any threads regarding our Lord. Seems there are those who insist that THEIR way is the ONLY way. It’s laughable.

Thank you Salvation, I so enjoy reading Msgr. Pope’s words.

What makes you think everything is in the Bible? The word “trinity” isn’t in the Bible. The Bible doesn’t say, “Believe the Bible.” Your argument doesn’t hold for basic reasons. The Bible, as a single volume, didn’t exist until over 400 years after the Resurrection. The books of Bible were assembled into the volume, thus impossible to reference themselves as a volume.

Should you choose, you can read any of the number of works, freely available on any number of Catholic websites (Vatican.va, EWTN.com, Catholic.com) that clearly demonstrate the Biblical references for every Catholic belief.

You are free to believe what you want, but that doesn’t mean you are free to tell the Catholic Church what it believes and teaches.
