ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE – Pope Francis said Thursday there are limits to freedom of expression, especially when it insults or ridicules someone's faith.[...]

"If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch," Francis said, throwing a pretend punch his way. "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."[...]

"There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others," he said. "They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr. Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother. There is a limit."

Honestly, if I were Catholic, I’d have to just sit this pope out. I’m sure there’s a freeper gathering himself to come on here and tell us what he really meant and how reasonable it really is, and that’s fine, but it seems like it’d be exhausting to have to do that every other day. At some point you’ve just got to let it go.

And here I thought that the Pope’s job was to further the cause of Christ in the world. So sad that the Pope doesn’t understand that the only way to God is through His Son.

Nice…blaming the victims. You can tell whose side this flop of a pope is on.

So, let me get this straight: the Pope is endorsing retaliation for an offense?

Thank God that Jesus did not feel the same way, or there would be no hope for any of us.

And he cannot exercise self-control, apparently.

Apparently this disgrace to the Church and Western civilization is pining away for the good old days of the Inquisition.

The Pope is right about one thing. When you directly insult a closely held emotional belief, you should be prepared for just about any kind of response, legal or illegal, from that individual. You are free to insult of course and take your chances. It is also clear that you can insult some with impunity, others not so much.

I’m not Catholic, so what the Pope says is of no real relevance to me.

But frankly, my opinion is that if my religion can be freely mocked, so can anybody else’s.

Besides, Islam is eminently mockable; and should be mocked on principle

Hey Vatican, how about a strong, principled, courageous pope... not a mush-headed politically correct appeaser.

No, he’s just sucking up to Islam. He’s perfectly fine with insulting Christianity.

That said, what people don’t get clear is the fact that it is fine to respond to an insult - but you have to do it within the law and within moral standards. Killing somebody who you feel has “insulted” your beliefs is not okay; in fact, the Pope should consider other ways of dealing with somebody who insults his mother. Punching them is not okay.
