Catholics are supposed to listen to the pope. Why? As explained in their churchs catechism: For the Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered.
Thats a pretty broad mandate.
But when Pope Francis starts cautioning Catholics against breeding like rabbits, some Catholics dont like what they hear including once and future Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum.
The pope is the leader of the Catholic Church, and when he speaks as the leader of the Catholic Church, Ill certainly pay attention, Santorum said on The Hugh Hewitt Show. But when he speaks in interviews, hes giving his own opinions, which I certainly will listen to, but from my perspective, that doesnt reflect the idea that people shouldnt be fruitful and multiply.

Watch out Rick, the Pope might punch you!
Did they poll random Catholics? What about that widow in Cedar Rapids or the truck driver in Miami?
I noticed it, too. Quite degrading.
That's right. It's in the Bible, true?
Even us Evil Protestants are supposed to believe that. So how come the Pope don't?
This pope is an embarrassment. Maybe an Hispanic affirmative action choice, much like Obama? Hopefully the next pope can be chosen for his real qualifications to understand and lead the church, presuming there is one after this pope is done.
He was probably directing that at people from places where it is awfully hard to feed, house and clothe a large family. Like New York, NJ, CT, Kenya...
I am Catholic and my brother is a bishop (retired) in the Church.
He listed to me rail a bit, reminded me to respect the position of Pope (if not the Pope as a man) and that all this stuff he is saying is not remotely binding on Catholics.
The First Vatican Council taught that three conditions must be met in order for a pronouncement to be considered infallible:
1. The pope must speak ex cathedra (from the Chair of Peter) in his official capacity.
2. The decision must be binding on the whole Church.
3. It must be on a matter of faith or morals.
So, we can tell him to get stuffed on this and a host (no pun intended) of things -— e.g., socialist nonsense, global warming, etc.
He’s Italian, not Hispanic.
Paraphrasing the old joke: Hey Pope, you don’t playa da game, you don’t makea da rules
"Not remotely binding", but still sufficiently mandatory to cause FR's contingent of überCatholics to label anyone a CINO or anti-Catholic for failing to heed it.
Where’s my sweater vest ?
He’s just misunderstood, AGAIN!
Yes it is degrading. It plays into the idea that animals and humans are somehow equal in the eyes of God which of course is blasphemous if you consider that humans are created in God’s image.
Furthermore it is a comment that displays a liberal ideology that does not show respect for procreation within the sanctity of a sacramental marriage.
At best and hopefully most likely they are carelessly chosen words that allow him to garner attention as “edgy” and “relatable” pope who can relate to the “common” man unlike his intellectual predecessor, in this context the word common is not complimentary. At its worst, the comment gives one a sense of his social values especially considering the mayhem surrounding the synod for the family.

Yeah, buddy! Phew! I didn’t think ANYBODY else was noticing those “überCatholics” following Frank over the cliff like the good little lemmings they are! Sure am glad you pointed that out! Heck, they’re probably not even aware that sweater vest man was inadvertently pointing out that Frank isn’t always acting as God’s mouth. I’d always thought Free Republic was comprised of fairly intelligent individuals, but when it comes to those überCatholics all bets are off! You and me bud! We can see what they’re up to!
Great....Now I’m caught agreeing with Santorum.

I am amazed by how many participants of FR continually fall for the games of the left. If we here can be so gullible, how can those who aren’t the least suspicious be knowledgeable?
Get one of these in the mail yet?
