Please keep in mind that on these threads there are only 2-3 prots that are actually Christians. The haters will never understand the distinction that you have made.
Completely uninformed opinions like the one above are part of the reason that I am eternally grateful to God for having me come out of the blind ignorance, hatred, and bigotry of protestantism.
Matthew 23:24 "You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

And what else can you point to outside of the Word that we need to know for our salvation??
For a Catholic, the three go together. That's simply how it is. There is no obligation on our part to explain to anyone.
>Good thing Paul didn't have that kind of an arrogant attitude in explaining Christianity. I believe the NT tells us we are to be ready in season and out of season to give a defense of the Gospel.<
The Gospel has Jesus speaking metaphorically to Peter. The "keys" were not to a gate; they represent the gradual revelation of the Deposit of Faith through the Church Jesus founded. I am ready to defend not only the Gospel, but the teaching of the Church founded in the Gospel teachings. What about the rest of Scripture? I mostly see Paul quoted. I often wonder why. The Bible is still a pretty thick book, even with the Apocrypha removed.
Well, that's a pretty quick change of attitude....going from we don't have to explain anything to being ready to defend the Gospel.
Glad to see you've come around on that one.
Post 102 is worthy of your perusal. I will save my breath for those that have demonstrated a willingness to learn/ understand. I will pray that you do actually become a Christian.

I am a Christian.
I believe Jesus died on a cross for my sins. I came to believe/know Jesus in the fifth grade. Based on His Word I know I am a sinner and cannot save myself nor can I be good enough to earn Heaven. I do my best to live as He did, and as He wants us to, though I admit I fall short. He has promised my sins are forgiven and they have been nailed to the cross because of His sacrifice on the cross. His Word tells me my sins have been covered. They are as far as the east is from the west and He remembers them no more. He has paid the debt that I cannot pay. I owe Him my life and my eternity. He desires that all believers be where He is.....Heaven.
All praise, glory, and thanksgiving go to Him and Him alone for the gracious and precious gift He has given to me.
Matthew 7:21-23
21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name? 23 And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!

I would also add the following regarding the "will of My Father in Heaven....
John 6:40 "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.
Hey if that helps to get prots through the night....God bless all of you.
It’s what the Man said....that’s good enough for me.
Have a good one verga...as always, it's been interesting.
I will no longer comment on this thread.
If I had a nickle for every time I heard that.....

What we know today as the Catholic Church is the Church spoken of in that passage BY JESUS TO PETER. The Catholic Church stems from the Gospel, and is not detached from it.

Taken out of context, as my reply was, it would appear to be. Ask me to defend the Immaculate Conception, The Perpetual Virginity of Mary; Purgatory, and most especially the Eucharist, you will get the same answer as before: I don't have to explain; it's what God teaches through the Catholic Church; I am a Catholic, and that is what *I BELIEVE!*
Glad to see you've come around on that one.
Not at all! I wasn't facing the wrong way in the first place.
After that last post, I think I'll pass. I'm greatly disappointed.
God bless you.
Thanks, verga, and God bless you!
Don't worry, I was wondering the same thing. It's not clear from his story, but it's possible he may have either also had First Communion (and maybe even Confirmation) when he was younger.
It does seem clear that if anyone could receive absolution after Confession (without instruction) it would be him though, as you pointed out. I'm sure the priest was sure of this either way. Confession, as a sacrament, only requires simple instruction for preparation anyway, what's far more important is an actual contrite heart, which he seemed to have in abundance.
