Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Character Studies From The Bible

Samuel

New International Version (NIV)

12 Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the Lord. 13 Now it was the practice of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat was being boiled 14 and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15 But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”

16 If the person said to him, “Let the fat be burned first, and then take whatever you want,” the servant would answer, “No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.”

17 This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they[b] were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.

18 But Samuel was ministering before the Lord—a boy wearing a linen ephod. 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to[c] the Lord.” Then they would go home. 21 And the Lord was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.

22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God[d] may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will intercede for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.

26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Anyone who has raised children knows that they grow very rapidly in their early years. "Back-to-School" shopping is essential, because there in is no way last year's clothes are going to fit! Little Samuel must have eagerly looked forward to these annual visits, and must have known that his Mom was watching over him from afar!

This family relationship was very important to Samuel, as Eli had not done a very good job raising his two sons. Here were men in spiritual authority over the People, ordained to serve God and assist the Israelites in serving Him. The Law of Moses SPECIFICALLY reserved the Fat part of the meat to God and Him alone. Yet, these two crooks were demanding that they be given the best part of the meat before it was sacrificed to God, and skimming off the best part for themselves. Not only that, but they were having immoral relations with the women who had come to the Tabernacle to worship.

Little Samuel must have seen this going on, yet he ministered daily and grew in strength and wisdom in spite of it all. It is quite a testament to his character that, even at that young age, he was not influenced by the phonies and sinners around him.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Good analogy with the young prophet to be.

Yes, absolutely we should all pray for a just and Godly peace for Israel. The security and peace of the whole world depends upon this.

Amen, left that other site.

And nothing much has changed as religious rackets continue, but there was God’s people who are faithful - and Samuel is an example.

Joining in lifting up in prayer, Israel, our beloved America, and all God’s people.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Sacrilege Of The Sons Of Eli"
Walters Ms. W.106, folio 17v
William de Brailes

OW the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they
knew not the LORD.

And the priest's custom with the people was,
that, when any man offered sacrifice, the
priest's servant came, while the flesh was
in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth
in his hand;
And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.

Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.

Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.

But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.

Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.

And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.

Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD's people to transgress.

If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men.
