It is the only possible thing which can. Throughout all of European History, the only thing which saved the West from the Muslims was Christianity. You can't inspire people to fight for a non-belief. Only through a powerful belief can you achieve the Zealotry necessary to combat Zealotry.
An atheist soldier doesn’t fight for a nonbelief. He fights for his country.
We aren't communicating accurately. Muslim's are fanatics. This is not just about Atheist soldiers, it is about a societal will to fight. Atheists don't have it.
They don't take seriously the infiltration of western society by Muslims. Europe is even now being taught the folly of this mindset.
Atheists have no common foundation from which to oppose Muslim fanaticism. They are individuals scattered throughout the population with no common group or association from which to gain a common and synergistic strength. They are "lone wolfs" who have a casual disregard for the enemy as opposed to a fervent and active animosity towards it.
A Society composed of predominantly Atheists won't know what hit them before they are subsumed by instinctive human passion and need for something spiritual in which to believe. It will be like intellectuals arguing with bears.
Atheist soldiers don’t fight for their country. They fight for themselves. If they are in a civil union, have offspring, and feel some sort of obligation to them, then they might fight to protect them.
They’re motivation to fight isn’t necessarily more evolved than self-interest.
Of course, when they enter that fight, and they are in the foxhole, that whole ‘atheist’ thing changes to ‘agnostic’ somewhere.
You can’t pick up a newspaper today without reading about more Christians being slaughtered by Islamic fanatics. Atheist or other non-believers might meet a similar fate, but being Christian is certainly no prophylactic against it.
This certainly applies to people who live their lives like Christians and behave the way Christ taught, but this is not the sort to which I am referring. The "Warrior" Christian mentality is what drove back the Muslims, not the pacifist variety.
That there is a cognitive dissonance between fighting and Christianity does not detract from the effectiveness of those who fight fanatically for their religious beliefs.
Sure, Christianity teaches it's adherents to "turn the other cheek" and to "go twain" if a man compels you to walk a mile, but fortunately for History, Western Christianity pretty much ignored those admonitions.
