Why is it ridiculous?
There was a thread about the guy that owned the first American “slave”. Prior to that it had all been people working for a number of years (7?) to pay off a debt. When it was time for the slave to gain his freedom, the master complained and argued his case to keep him. The master won the case. The master (and the slave) were black.
And at some point in time Americans could no longer import slaves from overseas. So the slave-owners made sure to take could care of the slaves and allow them to have healthy families etc. Or they would lose their workers.
I recall asking a preacher why God allowed multiple wives. He said something like “God had bigger problems and priorities with the people at that time.” And not saying that God liked it, or wanted it (like He doesn’t like any sin) - but it sure does/did happen and they didn’t all get struck down like Sodom & Gommorra, so in that sense He “allowed” it.

I understand your concern - it is a tough thing to think about. I’m glad that you (and me!) weren’t making the decisions during WWII when we were firebombing cities, the two nukes, etc. Of course we didn’t take it as far as God wanted the Israelites to in destroying EVERYTHING once they had conquered the land.
Of course - that also bit the Israelites in the butt as they married the foreign women, adopted their false Gods, and set them up for God’s judgement as they were dismantled and sent to Babylon. I guess God knew that would happen, and wanted to save the Israelites all of that anguish.
