Rome loves to redefine things... there were no priests in the NT church .... there were presbyters, and deacons.. there were teachers.. but no priests
the greek word for elder is different than the greek words for priest.. archiereus which translates into "High Priest" and hiereus which translates one that OFFERS SACRIFICES.
The role of the priesthood in scripture was to offer sacrifices.. That is what a priest does in scripture.. God set aside one tribe to be priests, they were not granted any land as God was their inheritance .
The greek have a couple words for priest
hiereus
1) a priest, one who offers sacrifices and in general in busied with sacred rites
a) referring to priests of Gentiles or the Jews,
2) metaph. of Christians, because, purified by the blood of Christ and brought into close intercourse with God, they devote their life to him alone and to Christ
and archiereus
1) chief priest, high priest
2) the high priests, these comprise in addition to one holding the high priestly office, both those who had previously discharged it and although disposed, continued to have great power in the State, as well as the members of the families from which high priest were created, provided that they had much influence in public affairs.
3) Used of Christ because by undergoing a bloody death he offered himself as an expiatory sacrifice to God, and has entered into the heavenly sanctuary where he continually intercedes on our behalf.
Neither role is given in scripture for the new church ..
Christ fulfilled the role of Priest on the cross.. there is no more sacrifice for sin
He is now our High Priest..
The word for elder is presbyteros here is the GREEK definition
1) elder, of age,
a) the elder of two people
b) advanced in life, an elder, a senior
1) forefathers
2) a term of rank or office
a) among the Jews
1) members of the great council or Sanhedrin (because in early times the rulers of the people, judges, etc., were selected from elderly men)
2) of those who in separate cities managed public affairs and administered justice
b) among the Christians, those who presided over the assemblies (or churches) The NT uses the term bishop, elders, and presbyters interchangeably
c) the twenty four members of the heavenly Sanhedrin or court seated on thrones around the throne of God
The Holy Spirit knows the difference in the greek words..there is no priesthood provided for in the NT church.
There was no priests in the new church.it was about 300 AD before the first priesthood appeared..
Greg Dues has written Catholic Customs & Traditions, a popular guide (New London: Twenty Third Publications, 2007). On page 166 he states, "Priesthood as we know it in the Catholic church was unheard of during the first generation of Christianity, because at that time priesthood was still associated with animal sacrifices in both the Jewish and pagan religions."
"A clearly defined local leadership in the form of elders, or presbyteroi, became still more important when the original apostles and disciples of Jesus died. The chief elder in each community was often called the episkopos (Greek, 'overseer'). In English this came to be translated as 'bishop' (Latin, episcopus). Ordinarily he presided over the community's Eucharistic assembly."
"When the Eucharist came to be regarded as a sacrifice, the role of the bishop took on a priestly dimension. By the third century bishops were considered priests. Presbyters or elders sometimes substituted for the bishop at the Eucharist. By the end of the third century people all over were using the title 'priest' (hierus in Greek and sacerdos in Latin) for whoever presided at the Eucharist."
The early Pastors were called clerks.. where we get our word Clergy from ...No Priests, no sacrifice ..
How so? Christ existed as God long before the world or Mary were created. There is no way she could be mother of his divine side. She is as human and you and I are, she was not sinless and needed a savior the same as you and I.I am speaking carefully, slowly, in small words. Most of all I am speaking truth.
Point being, my understanding is that when they were talking about Mary as "Theotokos" (mother of God) they weren't so much talking about Mary, as asserting something about Christ, the incarnation, and the the divine and human natures of Christ.
Do you happen to know when the Spirit enters the soul of the body? ... Neither do I.
Good stuff. I’ve tried (poorly) to point out the same issue with Rome’s ersatz priesthood: it’s invented by men. God set aside the REAL earthly priesthood and exalted Jesus as THE Priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews brilliantly details this.
You are indeed. Keep up the good work. From a former catholic.
Except that renaming Mary as *mother of God* does not even reference Christ anymore. It makes it all about Mary and removes any mention of Jesus.
If they were interested in making it about it Jesus, they'd have kept mention of Him and used the title the HOLY SPIRIT gave her in Scripture.
I am not a Catholic, nor could I ever be, but I do not think that this post deserves to be attacked with such vitriol. The time for this kind of arguing is over.
The die has been cast and churches and Christians must take sides. Morgana isn’t the problem here.
The battle is not between Catholics and protestants.
There are now two sides. Only TWO.
The side that rejects the world and the side that embraces it and all its sins.
If a church believes abortion is okay, open borders is no problem, if it thinks “climate change” is real and man-made, if it attacks capitalism (freedom) and calls for socialism then it has obviously embraced the world and its values. If it calls for world wide collective power to run the world economy then it is wanting the beast to arise.
This does NOT mean that all of the members of that church embrace the world and its sins. It is the people and their hearts and souls that are to be saved, not the institutions, not ANY institution.
There is no human institution that will survive. Revelation tells us that even most churches will join the anti-Christ before the end comes.
Denominations, all of them, are human creations. Church bureaucracies are human creations.
Christians who bow to God through Jesus and pray in Jesus name (exclusively) are the “one true church”. They do not need buildings with signs on them, they do not need to go by the same name or be part of the same clubs.
This is my belief.
But the time to argue about all of this is over.
Yes, over.
Those of us who reject the world must now sell our cloaks and buy swords. We must defend ourselves and our families from the beast that has arisen. Not all who call themselves Christian will join us, more likely MOST of them will fall away under the threats and temptations of the beast.
The institutions and denominations and bureaucracies are no longer relevant. They cannot save your soul. They are human edifices and they will ALL fall. Every one of them is going to either embrace the beast or be destroyed by it.
It won’t matter. Do not let their defections and destruction sway you. Be strong as this comes to pass.
The protestant churches will fall to the world or be destroyed and the same with the Catholic Church. It does not matter. The vast majority of “Christians” will embrace the new world order run by the beast. Do not let this certainty scare you, do not let it sway you.
The few of us that are left who stay strong and refuse to surrender, yes FEW, are the “true church”. The real church is not one of buildings and signs or symbols but of souls and hearts and minds.
It is you and me that Jesus came to save. We are His church.
Jesus is the way, the truth and the light and no one will enter heaven except through Him.
There are no Saints, there is no intercession, there are no human authority figures, no bureaucracy between you and salvation. You do not need them, you do not need their assistance. They are all superfluous.
There are no Catholics, no Baptists, no Presbyterians, no Lutherans, no anything.
There is you and Jesus and the written guide to Salvation.
So stop fighting about things that no longer matter. This is like arguing about the deck chairs beneath an erupting Vesuvius. A distraction. A useless and needless sideshow.
The beast has arisen.
Stop fighting each other.
Christ gave us all the keys to heaven, HIMSELF
Look! Squirrel! (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain TRUTH!)
**This is my belief.
But the time to argue about all of this is over.
Yes, over.**
This has been my belief for a long time.
This week the SCOTUS handed down two of the most devastating decisions to religious liberty imaginable, and it has not made an impression on many in these forums.
A number of us have agreed to pray each night at 11:00 for our country and it's leaders. It is strictly informal in the privacy of your own home, or where ever you happen to be at that time.
We don't have a ping list or anything, yet.
Please see post 173
The Uncomfortable Question: Should We Have Six Catholic Justices on the Supreme Court?
LOL! Presidents nominated them and the Senate approved them. Why are you not happy with that?
Or are you really the president posting under the name of kayaker from WV?
I think you've missed the point. This thread illustrates how mistaken Born Again Christians are to consider RC's and their church allies. They aren't, never have been and never will be. They will serve their church's interests exclusively. It is as it has always been for us that are united by faith, we stand alone.
Don't despair, Jesus has us in his hand and he will not lose any the Father has given Him.
And that’s why He didn’t authorize every Tom, Dick, and Harry to go forth and preach His Word.
Pardon me, but did you really think that answer was a valid response.
The point is that "the SCOTUS handed down two of the most devastating decisions to religious liberty imaginable ..." was done by ROMAN CATHOLIC CULTISTS!
Your response does nothing to address that point, but instead tries to deflect from the truth about your religion. If the Roman Catholic cult had a relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, maybe they would honor God rather than Lucifer's crowd!
Lunk 6: 43 No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
It would be near impossible to get a Born Again Christian on the SCOTUS. The GOPe would never support someone who actually believes the Bible is the inspired Word of God.
