The Majority of Catholic Republicans Believe in Climate Change
Pacific Standard ^ | Jun 23, 2015 | J. Wesley Judd

Posted on 07/13/2015 11:56:23 AM PDT by Gamecock

Last week, Pope Francis released his long awaited—and preemptively leaked—encyclical, acknowledging climate change as mostly human-induced and cause for drastic transformation on both individual and nationwide levels. It was an unprecedented move by the leader of the Catholic Church, as religiosity has long been linked to lower levels of climate concern. Fortunately, however, the Pope's message will fall on receptive ears.

Researchers at the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication have found that, among religious Republicans—and Republicans are more likely to be religious than Democrats—Catholic Republicans are "more convinced that global warming is happening and human-caused, and are more worried and supportive of climate policies, than are non-Catholic Republicans," the authors write.

In fact, the majority of Catholic Republicans (51 percent) believe global warming is indeed happening, compared to 42 percent of non-Catholic Republicans. Catholic Republicans are also more likely to think global warming is primarily caused by humans than non-Catholic Republicans, although by a smaller margin—36 percent vs. 30 percent. Not surprisingly, those percentages represent the number of Catholic Republicans who are worried about global warming versus non-Catholic Republicans, too.

The researchers also found 71 percent of Catholic Republicans express support of policies that address global warming, such as tax rebates for solar panels or energy efficient vehicles, while only 64 percent of non-Catholic Republicans do.

Their data was collected between fall 2012 and spring 2015 via six nationally representative surveys.

Much like all cults, they gulp down the Kool-Aid

since you clearly know what every Catholic thinks about every topic, kindly be so good as to inform me what Kool-Aid I am drinking, so I can cease and desist, and thus become a proper Christian like yourself...

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

um, the individual I responded to is not my ‘brother’ in any sense of the word...

So ask the Protestants or Jews or Muslims or Hindus or Atheists who live closest to those Catholics what they think. You'd get the same numbers -- or higher ones.

Must Catholics live in highly urbanized liberal states and share the views of their neighbors of other religions. No surprise there.

It is simply not true that the majority of Catholics believe in global warming. Catholics are generally conservative. They recognize global warming as a political issue based on gaining more political control of the people and squashing industrial initiative. The Pacific Standard article is just a propaganda piece.

Well, now, you’re wasting your breath; and surely you are aware that the OP was posting this only to give his compadres another opportunity to dump on the Catholic Church...no other purpoe...

Who doesn't believe the climate changes?

The whole ‘climate-change’ canard is one of the biggest Strawmen in history.

Of course, when they say the magical phrase ‘climate change’ you're supposed to translate that to Man Made climate change - But that isn't the phrase they use is it?

Isn’t that weird?

Looking at the numbers, and the way the article parses the sentences, this is an attempt to make things look different from the reality. For example:
“In fact, the majority of Catholic Republicans (51 percent) believe global warming is indeed happening”

Then later, we find that only 36% believe global warming is caused by humans.

The entire article is meant to deceive.

The question isn't whether the climate changes, because it does. The pertinent question is whether people believe in man-made global warming, and nothing close to a majority of GOP Catholics think so.

But that doesn't support the narrative our resident reprobate rumpswabs are eager to lap up like vomit, does it?

And since you folks brought it up -- I hope you can appreciate the irony of saying "they think whatever they are told to think," when the substance of the article suggests the opposite, which in turn suggests that you didn't do anything except read the title and verify that it had been posted by one of your fellow rumpswabs.

I believe it’s blasphemous to think that we are so powerful as to be able to destroy God’s creation as a mere byproduct of our existence.

Yes, indeed. What utter gall these people have, thinking they can have any influence over the weather. Anyone with an ounce of brains knows what causes global warming. It is that big burning orb in the sky called the sun. It reminds me of some idiot standing at the sea shore and ordering the tide not to come in. Good post.

The Majority of Catholic Republicans Believe in Climate Change

Probably the same 'Catholics' and 'Republicans' that support social justice, abortion and homosexual equality.

CINOs and RINOs

“The Majority of Catholic Republicans Believe in [man-caused] Climate Change”...but receive communion in the hand, a clear sign that neither they nor their priests believe in transubstantiation.

Don’t you know an ice age is coming?

These clowns can't figure out if it is cooling or warming. Actually, I think it is far more sinister than that. These communist chumps will try anything to undermine capitalism and the western democracies. If it wasn't global warming/cooling, it would be something else. This is just another way for the evil scum bags of the world to do this. If they were serious, they would confront Russia, China and India, the worst polluters on earth. They are very selective about it. I got no time for them.

So are you not a Christian? I know he is.
