How to Go to Heaven

May 12, 2015 |

Sometimes people make it sound like the Catholic understanding of how to get to heaven is really complex.

It’s not.

While you can go into any of Christ’s teachings in a lot of very rich detail, he made sure that this one can be understood even by a child.

I can summarize it in two sentences.

The two sentences are these: To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.

That’s it. That’s all there is to it. And we can show each of these things from the Bible.

The need to repent is shown by the fact that, right at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus began preaching the gospel, saying “repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:14-15).

The need for faith is shown when the author of the letter to the Hebrews writes that “Without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Heb. 11:6).

And the need for baptism is shown when St. Peter flatly tells us: “Baptism now saves you” (1 Peter 3:21).

So that’s what you need to do if you want to come to God and be saved: Repent, have faith, and be baptized.

If you do these things, you’ll be in a state of grace, and as long as you remain in a state of grace, you’ll go to heaven.

But we still have free will, and we can still turn our backs on God and fall from grace, to use St. Paul’s phrase (Galatians 5:4).

St. Paul is very clear about the possibility of us committing mortal sin. He tells us: “Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

To turn away from God and commit mortal sin is the opposite of repenting. So when we fall into mortal sin, we need to turn back to God—to repent again.

We also need to have faith.

And then we need to go to confession. This is something Jesus indicated just after he rose from the dead. He came to his disciples, breathed on them, and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:22-23)

So Jesus empowered his ministers to forgive or retain sins. In order for a priest to know whether he is to forgive or retain a sin, he needs to know about the sin and whether we have repented of it. That means we need to go and tell him these things, and so we have the sacrament of confession.

So that’s what you need to do. To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.

It’s all thoroughly biblical.

.....”all souls return to the Maker that sent them. Then there is a time for unfettered teaching.... called the LORD’s Day. After that there is to be a ‘testing’ to allow each soul to decide if they wish to live or they wish to die”....

Which begs to ask where is this belief coming from? Could you identify it's origin?

“I guess my point is the walk we take to Him can have diversions along the way but I will always think that I could have known Him ‘all that time’ from the day my journey started”

You describe exactly how I felt (feel) when I finally woke up and KNEW what had been right there all along. Thank you for your testimony. Hit home for me.

I am very happy that you shared your story.

I got chills when I read what happened at the dining table.

I was in a Bible Study on a Wednesday night when I was born again. It had been a long struggle and many people were praying for my salvation. I didn’t know that at the time. Their prayers were finally answered. They had been diligent!

It is good - very good - to share our stories. That’s the most important part of a believer’s baptism: A public declaration of God’s power to change a life.

May God Richly Bless you, my beloved.

How does the Rosary incorporate Mary into prayer?

I’m not sure I understand the question. We ask for her prayers. We speak words of praise to her and ask her, “et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium, ostende.” [And, after our exile, show us Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb.]

But the soul of the Rosary is “meditation” on 20 different topics,(in groups of 5) the “mysteries.” And how people meditate is an individual matter. The last time I meditated on the Annunciation, for example, I thought mostly about the wonder of the “rational animal” and life beginning at conception.

I hope that’s kind of responsive.

I hope that’s kind of responsive.

It is; and thank you!

But I've always heard, "to pray the Rosary" and never "meditate" -- I was just seeking clarification because of that. Plus part of the text I've read involves asking her to pray for the person "meditating" the words.

Just seems odd when one can go directly to God himself.

Thanks for the clarification --

I think you can figure that one out old cow, from Heaven to the Earth where they will get new bodies fit for eternal physical living ... this corruptible must put on incorruptible. If God will bring with Jesus those who have died in Christ, then those who have died in Christ will need to be somewhere in the neighborhood of where Jesus is now, before coming here in the Air to get the Bride and the bridesmaids who are ready.

It seems: ineffectively.

Absolutely. Only God is omniscient and capable of hearing prayer. Seems a shame to waste all of that time and effort when God is accessible directly!

Maybe you missed the second part of the question, so I'll repost it so you don't have to go looking for it: When did the believers at Pentecost and in the house of Cornelius receive eternal life?

The answer to that question will answer the first part of the question. If it's too hard for you to answer directly, just let it go. Most will understand.

There is no need to post an oblique non-answer to such a simple, straightforward question whose answer is illustrated by the Holy Spirit suddenly in those listening to Peter's sermon, even before he finished preaching in the house of Cornelius.

I know, I know. After the first six pack I generally attempt the unmoved mover argument. Second six pack, and it’s Anselm.

Ungggh. Aristotle... You're the life of the party! And Anselm?? Over BEERS? I know... Live music... UP loud.
