In comments likely to enhance his progressive reputation, Pope Francis has written a long, open letter to the founder of La Repubblica newspaper, Eugenio Scalfari, stating that non-believers would be forgiven by God if they followed their consciences. Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: "You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don't believe and who don't seek the faith. I start by saying - and this is the fundamental thing - that God's mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.
"Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience."

The Pope is tragically in error. To reject this unspeakable gift of love is to reject God Himself. As Psalms 14 states, "...the fool says in his heart, NO God!" An atheist is not someone who is in ignorance, but rather someone who foolishly rejects God.

Maybe the Catholic Church picked the wrong guy to be Pope?

I was raised in the Church, became a Methodist in adulthood, but this Pope does not seem to grasp the basics of Christianity.

Atheists could not really care less, because they don’t believe in God or Heaven.
This is what you get when you have someone ideologically sympathetic to Liberation Theology.
“Going to Heaven” means spending eternity with your God. Satan is the God of this World, and this Pope, so he is correct. Atheists will spend eternity in the Eternal Lake of Fire with Satan, the God of this world.
There is a powerful being who would encourage such a belief.
Who will rid us of this troublesome pope?
The Catholic Church is the vehicle of my faith. But I have said for a long time, the leadership is sinfully horrific. The church leadership from Pope to priest has gone way off track. The Catholic Church has forgotten that it’s mission is to save souls.
The church has gone astray and found it’s way back before. I pray it can happen again. God needs to clean house a bit.
