And you’re proud of that?

The CCC is actually quite good. It has its faults, but in the hands of a Catholic catechist is a terrific resource. I’ve been teaching from it for 12 years.

What’s wrong with the Baltimore Catechism or the Catechism of St. Pius X?

It’s called humor.

The Baltimore Catechism is for children. It doesn’t address its subject in a manner appropriate for adults, so that its theology is frequently wanting. Also, it’s a product of the American hierarchy, not the universal church. The catechism of Pius X is better but lacks any critical apparatus or reference to magisterial teaching from the past 100 years, much of it highly relevant to current concerns.

As I said, the CCC has its faults, but the criticisms at that link are mostly dishonest.

And in the past 100 years, what new magisterial teaching has been taught?

Yes, there is Salvation outside the Catholic Church?

Jews and Muslims worship the same God as Catholics, yet they both deny the Divinity of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity?

And, most recently, "irregular" unions can be be good. Even "good" for the poor children involved?

CCC 2357-2359 is quite clear that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered and cannot be approved under any circumstances. Also that homosexual persons are called to chastity and self mastery, approaching Christian perfection through prayer and sacramental grace. Since when is it contrary to the faith to hate the sin but love the sinner?

How about the actual quotes from the “catechism”? Do you believe they are Catholic; do you teach that heresy to your students?

That was then.

But there’s a new pope in town now.

I don’t know what nonsense you’re talking about. Quas primas, Casti conubii, summi pontificatus, mystici corporis, and humane vitae are all magisterial. So is Ordinatio sacerdotalis. The CCC has dozens of citations from Pius XI and XII.

What actual quotes?

I teach my students the Catholic faith. If a passage from the CCC is problematic, I maneuver around it. The CCC is a resource, not an idol.

And what’s with the scare quotes on “catechism”? You think maybe it’s not a catechism? What is it, then?

For children, you say?

Matthew 18:
[2] And Jesus calling unto him a little child, set him in the midst of them, [3] And said: Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

And from the Baltimore Catechism:

457. What is the sacrament of Matrimony?
Matrimony is the sacrament by which a baptized man and a baptized woman bind themselves for life in a lawful marriage and receive the grace to discharge their duties.

And God created man to his own image; to the image of God he created him. Male and female he created them. And God blessed them, saying “Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.” (Genesis 1:27-28)

458. What are the chief duties of husband and wife in the married state?
The chief duties of husband and wife in the married state are to be faithful to each other, and to provide in every way for the welfare of the children God may give them.

Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is becoming in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter towards them. (Colossians 3:18-19)

459. Why does the bond of the sacrament of Matrimony last until the death of husband or wife?

The bond of the sacrament of Matrimony lasts until the death of husband or wife because Christ has said: “What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.”

Thank for admitting that JP II’s catechism is problematic.

I’ve noticed. I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make. Maybe you just want to sulk because times are tough. That isn’t helping anyone.

You sound exactly like the Protestants who maneuver around the Bible.

I said that an hour ago. An hour that I’ll never get back, thanks to your poor reading skills and insistence on wallowing in grievance.

I’ve got no desire to be part of a traddie circular firing squad, so good night to you.

My point is: Why are you teaching JP II’s faulty catechism to your students, to your own editorial whims? Are you more Catholic than JP II?
