The reality of it is this has been going on since the promulgation of the new ecumenical religion of Vatican II. This is not just a Francis thing. Unfortunately, most Catholics don't want to admit to it (ie. they think Benedict was some sort of anomaly...Blue Mosque anyone?). And most, if not all, prelates are complicit.
We need divine intervention at this point.

This whole letter sounds like the church is begging them for mercy. I don’t see any redeeming qualities in this papal statement.

No one receives mercy through Islam. It is of the spirit of antichrist, a creation of all that is opposed to The Lord. Nothing about Islam as a religion is to be respected in the sense the article seems to indicate. May as well do reverence to Scientology or the Moonies.
Does that mean that Muslums are immoral? Actually, no, many practicing Muslims are trying to be moral as they have been taught to be moral (there are issues with what is taught, but they don’t get everything wrong).
Morality, both the knowledge of good and evil and the art of discriminating against the latter in favor of the former, is neither here nor there ... Islam is simply helpless, impotent, to make men holy because it comes from men and demons and not from God.
No one is justified by Islam. No one.
To be sure, it is as a worldly/practical measure better to be trying to be moral than to be flagrantly wicked, but people being nice and decent folk as the charge headlong into Hell that is not how Christians should be content to leave things.
