Unlike Italy, Pope Backs Anti-Gay Marriage Push in Mexico

After having sat out an Italian debate in May over the legalization of civil unions for same-sex couples, Pope Francis broke his silence on Sunday by coming out in support of Mexico's Catholic bishops in their efforts to derail a push for gay marriage.

ROME-After having remained quiet while Italy debated civil unions for same-sex couples in May, on Sunday Pope Francis expressed support for the Mexican bishops in their efforts to support the “family and life” amid a burgeoning national debate over gay marriage.

“I join willingly the Bishops of Mexico in supporting the efforts of the Church and civil society in favor of the family and of life, which at this time require special pastoral and cultural attention worldwide,” Francis said after the weekly Angelus prayer.

Also talking about Mexico, a country he visited last February, the pope also said he was praying for its violence to end, mentioning that in recent days it has affected even some priests. He was referring to this week’s murder of two priests and the kidnapping of a third, in a country that has long been one of the most dangerous ones in the world for Catholic ministers.

On Saturday, the streets of Mexico City were covered in white, as an estimated 215,000 people dressed in this color and carrying balloons participated in a rally in opposition to President Enrique Pena Nieto’s push to legalize same-sex marriage.

The marchers held banners warning against same-sex marriage and demanding parents’ right to control sex education in schools.

In May, Pena Nieto proposed legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide, since it’s currently only legal in some places such as Mexico City, the northern state of Coahuila and Quintana Roo state on the Caribbean coast.

Although many Christian denominations supported the rally, organized by the..........

The religious principles of this Pope are so questionable a story stating he supports traditional Catholic moral teaching earns a headline.

Which lends credence to the belief that Francis is okay with civil unions, but not gay marriage. A Catholic can not be okay with either.

He was for it before he was against it until the liberals went nuts, and then he’ll rethink what he was for before he was opposed.

This Pope’s adherence to what most expect from a Catholic Leader remains ‘spotty’. Perhaps someone should give The Pontiff a Dalmatian Puppy as a new mascot. Neutered in advance, of course.

I agree, this position lacks any logic. Traditional Catholicism teaches that sex outside of a sacramental marriage is always sinful regardless of the gender of the participants or the legality of marriage in their particular country. For the leader of the church to take such a relativistic view does nothing but further confuse the issue.

Pope Frances provides neither moral clarity nor moral leadership. He is a tool for the evils of liberalism and the dark powers. He presides over a corrupt church.

Ye of disappointed faith, abandon hope and form a new church.

Behind the scenes, Catholic priests are being murdered in Mexico. In the last 10 years, between 30-36 (sources disagree) have been murdered. Within the month, two were abducted and murdered.

The church has been protesting the government for a while now, calling for Catholics to take a stand against homosexual marriage. But along with the unending drug war, and other violence, it is taking a toll.

Yeah, we already have 33,000 different Christian churches who disagree with each other and refuse to talk to one another, let's start another one!

Rap, I don’t think anyone actually has the authority on their own to found a church.

Do you?

Did the proposed Italian civil union legislation specify that that the civil participants would be “spouses” or that the union would be predicated upon sexual intimacy?

If not, it might have been legislation -— without reference to sodomy -— that could benefit anybody, e.g. family members who share a household and finances, and are permanent caregivers for a disabled son, sister, grandmother.

I know from my tax work you can form a church. The question really is whether you can get a large enough membership to become viable. And to stay on the right side of the tax laws is mandatory.

I'm not talking about authority from the government. I guess they (govt) would license you even to get properly incorporated as a Church-of-What's-Happenion'-Now to worship your dog, your demons or yourself.

I am talking about authority from God.

People have wanted a Pope that was not from Europe for a long time. He comes in and is the worst one in 75 years. It’s like Obama is the first half black president and he strikes out too.
