Vatican bans cremation ashes scattering in new guidelines
BBC ^ | 10/25/16

It said the Church could not "condone attitudes or permit rites that involve erroneous ideas about death, such as considering death as the definitive annihilation of the person, or the moment of fusion with Mother Nature or the universe, or as a stage in the cycle of regeneration, or as the definitive liberation from the 'prison' of the body".

The guidelines reiterated that Catholics who chose to be cremated "for reasons contrary to the Christian faith" must be denied a Christian funeral.

The Vatican also stressed that "the Church continues to prefer the practice of burying the bodies of the deceased, because this shows a greater esteem towards the deceased".

I’ve seen an increase in cremation among people who would normally not even consider it, due to the expense of traditional burial, even among my own family. Not Catholics, but traditional, southern Baptists. When even the most economical burial is over $10,000 not including headstone, and when a lot of people are stretched financially, something is going to have to give way. Compared to cremation at I believe less than $1,000, more and more are going to choose to take that route. I don’t like it myself, the obliteration of the body, by fire, is not good symbolism, not good at all.

On a related note, we have a private family cemetery, not altogether common among old, rural southern families. In the past several years, there have been burials of unrelated people there without permission. When contacted, the families usually say the deceased was a friend of the family, one just said they always liked that spot (does have a pretty view). But, we suspect cost of a burial plot had a lot to do with it. We’re not going to force somebody to exhume and rebury their loved one, so what can you do? We started locking the gate with a note to call a relative nearby to unlock it. Everybody in the immediate family has a key.

Since I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, I have chosen to be buried at sea.

Since I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, I have chosen to be buried at sea.

I was Army so I know very little about the USMC and almost nothing about the Navy but I always thought that being buried at sea was done out of practical necessity. That is,you can't have a deceased Sailor or Marine on board for obvious reasons.Apart from a death at sea can a Sailor or Marine be buried at sea? It seems to me that it might even be illegal under Federal law (although I certainly could be wrong).

Also, out of curiosity (and I know it's none of my business) but if,by chance, your loved ones expressed a strong desire to be able to visit you or to have your ashes nearby would that cause you to re-think your position?

” ... What came next was absolutely ash-tonishing though. Turns out there were three boxes of decedent ashes up there. Flanking my friend were the family’s beloved former pets’ remains. Two white rats. To this date, I am without words -—”

Between two cremated Democrats?!? That’s awful!

Body is dead, the life that was in it is with Yeshua if they’re Christian which goes without saying. So okay, your belief is that the Trinity inhabits a dead body.

I am extremely claustrophobic but I will still be buried. No cremation for me.

I think I'm sticking with a regular burial. That way, my survivors will be correct when applying the adage, "I'll bet he's spinning in his grave."

The saying doesn't apply when you're cremated.
