Family Research Council (FRC) today expressed outrage after the State of Georgia issued a legal demand that Dr. Eric Walsh, a lay pastor, hand over his sermons, sermon notes and all pastoral documentation, including his Bible. FRC launched a petition today at frc.org/walsh that calls on Governor Deal to "correct this egregious over-reach of the state into church affairs."
"This demand for Dr. Eric Walsh's sermons, sermons notes and ministerial documentation is an alarming display of government intrusion into the sanctity of the church, pastor's study and pulpit," said Tony Perkins, Family Research Council president and himself an ordained pastor. "This is something that I would have expected to see in a communist country, not America. The pulpit is to be governed only by the Word of God. Government scrutiny of speech in the pulpit is unconstitutional and unconscionable. Family Research Council stands with Dr. Walsh, and any other pastor who is targeted by the government because of what is said in the pulpit. We call on Gov. Deal to correct this egregious over-reach of the state into church affairs."
Travis Weber, director of FRC's Center for Religious Liberty, joins Dr. Eric Walsh at a press conference later today at the Georgia State Capitol, along with Walsh's attorneys at First Liberty Institute and an array of pastors and ministry leaders calling for the State of Georgia to cease its hostility toward people of faith.

From the docket, it looks like he sued the Georgia Department of Public Health and 5 individuals. The governor doesn’t appear to be a party.
If you have a strong case, you try it in court. If you have a weak case, you try it in the media. Sometimes it works (see O.J. Simpson) and sometimes it doesn’t (see the Baltimore cop prosecutions).
Our media tell us EXACTLY what they want us to know, HOW much they want us to know and WHEN they want us to know it.
One thing is FOR SURE: We will NEVER, ever, ever, get the truth from them about this issue. NEVAH!
Amen to that.
What ever happened to that cult that had aliens? Does anyone know...or care?
Its sketchy because it is sketchy.
Two years ago this guy was offered a job with the state of Georgia. He left out important information about being suspended from his current job. This came up during the background and reference check. The offer was withdrawn. He was never hired but he has been playing this as if he was fired for his faith. Not true. Moreover, he has sued the state for not hiring him. The lawyers defending against this suit have filed requests that are part of the law suit. Again this man is portraying this as something it is not. When you sue an entity count on their lawyers poring over every aspect of your lufe.
He was NOT fired....you cannot be fired from a job you were never hired for
Deal has nothing to do with this
fRC and Walsh are puffing their positions. THEY have sued the state. The request is from the lawyers who are doing what all lawyers do....ask for everything
That is not what is going on here
Walsh filed a law suit against the state. He was not hired for a job because he withheld information during the interview process. The state withdrew the offer. Walsh was never hired. So he decides to file a federal law suit. Lawyers defending the state have asked for this information as part of the law suit.....it’s what lawyers do
Yes precisely
WRONG. He was NEVER hired for the job. He was tendered an offer pending reference and background checks. He failed to inform the state of Georgia that he was suspended from his previous job in Pasadena. So Walsh sued the state and the lawyers are doing what lawyers do
He doesn’t seem to be helping. The guy’s been a disappointment to say the least. But he is a former dimocrat.
Deal is not party to the law suit. This is in federal court. Deal has zero he can do about it
Moreover, Walsh is bogus in his claim. The thing that got his offer letter (he was never hired) pulled back was his failure to disclose his then suspension from his Pasadena joh
I shouldn’t have relied on the Breibart headline. The Fox ‘dumped’ appears to be more accurate.
Thanks for injecting some sanity. It really bugs me when outfits like the Daily Caller and First Liberty knowingly omit key aspects of a story just to get people spun up and make more money.
This intellectual dishonesty for profit is one of the biggest weaknesses of the conservative movement and will delegitimize us in the long run.
True words
[He was NOT fired....you cannot be fired from a job you were never hired for]
He was fired from his government job.
“Dr. Eric Walsh was one of the nations leading health administrators until being fired in 2014 by the Georgia Department of Public Health. A lay minister in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Walsh was fired after Georgia officials learned of his faith.”
That is Walsy’s take. I live in Georgia. This story is two years old. He had an offer which the state pulled back during reference check.
“Here’s something to think on government - If you want the church to stay out of your affairs, stay out of church affairs.”
Romans 13:1-7 is one of the most misinterpreted pieces of Scripture in the church today. The Biblical principle is that civil government (ie. “government”) has limited jurisdiction. Civil government cannot assign itself authority that God never intended for it to have, and we are not obligated to obey when civil authorities try to exercise power in areas where they clearly have no jurisdiction. This concept applies to all “higher powers” and “governing authorities”, whether civil, church, family, individual or any other recognized authority. Of course, civil authorities will try anyway, and that is when unity among Christians is especially critical.
“he can’t hide behind his First Amendment protections’
What is the relevance of his faith and moral positions to the State job that he was seeking? I was not aware of a litmus test which would effectively exclude all faithful Christians from these positions.
As you go through this thread, you'll see that there is a lot more to this story than what the original article includes.
