They were asking for scientists to make use of the ‘Scientific Method’ which Catholic scientists invented and is still in use today. Science is supposed to be based on provable, reproducible facts, that is what they were after. Since they knew they did not have a way to prove it, they wanted it to be taught as theory until science had the advanced tools to prove it.

Popes once excommunicate kings who stepped out of line. Maybe Bergoglio should “excommunicate” Trump and put the USA under a ban..

If properly done only a small subset need be deported. When the rest see what looks like a hand writing GO HOME on the wall, most of the rest will go. Then the hard core stayers can be dealt with.

I agree with that principle. My point was that the focus shouldn’t be on illegal aliens from just one country of origin but any country of origin.

D'ye suppose it come from the leadership in the Vatican being insufficiently Catholic?

No, it's worse than that, Buckeye. Not for 1500 years, but for 2,000 years. Don't you know that of Jesus' 12 hand-picked men, 11 abandoned him when push came to shove, and only one remained with Mother Mary at the Foot of The Cross?

At that moment, they were the Church.

It is the same Church. It's had a hefty share of popes who were dumb, naive, incompetent, frail, vacillating, or occasionally evil, but the Church has always survived by the grace of God and the skin of our teeth.

Read a bit of history. After the shock passes it tends to steady one.

I heard this anecdote just the other day. After spending the better part of 15 years locked in constant conflict with Pope Pius VII (which included putting the pope in prison), Napoleon Bonaparte told Pius’ adept Secretary of State, Cardinal Consalvi, that he would “crush” the Roman Catholic Church.

: The cardinal sighed and shook his head over the emperor’s naivete and answered. "If in 1,800 years we clergy have failed to destroy the Church, do you really think that you'll be able to do it?"

So, the bishops in America put out a voter guide back in 2012, called the "Five Non-Negotiables."

Actually, that book was "The Voters Guide for Serious Catholics" put out by Catholic Answers. I used that as the basis for my own book this election cycle, "Defeating the Culture of Death: The Pro-Life Vote" that I sent to every Cardinal, Archbishop, and Bishop in charge of a diocese in America. My purpose was to get them to finally speak up. Some did.

I don’t deny that, I agree with and understand your viewpoint.

I know many good and devout Catholics, and Catholic clergy who I like and respect. But I won’t be going back to church in a Catholic church. I have my own personal reasons for that, which if I were to share, you or others would likely understand. Those close to me who I have shared with, do.

It is nothing dogmatic against Catholics at all, though I am upset with the politics of the Pope and his seeming embrace of things that are directly counter to what I have grown up with as a Catholic.

Mmmm....Nicolas Copernicus, a Catholic cleric, "got it" 80 years before Galileo, in a book dedicated to the Pope and NOT suppressed by the Catholic church.

One o Galileo's problems was that he tended to popularize hypothesis as fact.

The Ptolemaic geo-centric system, based on the eyeball-observable motions of celestial bodies and sophisticated math, was just as accurate as the Galilean system. It could successfully predict solstices and equinoxes, tides, eclipses, and many other phenomena. The very calendar we still use today, was based on the Ptolemaic calculations, which were more accurate than Galileo's for about another 100 years before the kinks in Galileo's system got banged out.

The "missing" star parallaxes demanded by Galileo's system could not be observed (and would not be until 1838).

Cardinal Robert Bellarmine told Galileo there would be no problem if he presented his ideas as hypothesis until he could prove them as fact.

Galileo's second trial (after Bellarmine's death) was a real FUBAR --- but it wasn't Church anti-scientism, as it's been made out to be.

I have a lot of friends over in various parts of Europe - from the UK and Ireland to Sweden to Italy and Germany to the former Yugoslavia and Ukraine and they all have the same exaggerated view of Trump. Apparently European media has lied to a greater extent than even the US media so it is not surprising that the view from the Vatican would see Hillary as better and Trump as Satan incarnate. Even my conservative friends are at a loss as to why he won when he was so ‘evil’ according to their media.

However, you would expect a spiritual leader as prominent as the Pope to actually have checked the facts. I liked Benedict but have no admiration for Francis. I see him as a smug opportunist like Alexander VI (Borgia).

Most of the Catholics here in rural South Dakota supported Trump. In fact, I only know 2 who did not (both middle aged men)

Do Catholics have an option to ‘tithe’/donate to where ever they choose?

For Mormons, ‘tithing’ is to be done to the LDS church proper - I used to make my checks out to SLC “the corporation of the president of the CoJCoLDS”,n with any money given to charites being over what was owed to the Mormon church. However Evangelicals often choose where to donate - my husband and I were between churches and ‘tithed’/donated to various ministries and still divide our donations between the local church and other ministries.

rlmorel never said anything about why he was inactive or about ‘looking for the perfect church’.

There are many reasons people leave churches. Don’t assume
