Just the exterior. Construction hazards was the excuse, but who knows. As with so many structured pilgrimages, it always felt "rushed", although we most certainly were not. This was just one example where I wish I'd had more time.

Moslems take to contraception as soon as they get a little prosperity and modern technology. Iran’s birthrate in 2015 was 1.65. Spain’s was 1.32, and that includes the quite numerous Moslem population of Spain.

Interesting point. I was aware that “westernized” Mohammedans tended to embrace contraception at a similar rate to other Western women (and men), but not that they had in their native countries. An ironic “hope” for the future?
“Spengler,” (David Goldman?) believes Moslems will die out before they conquer. Mark Steyn believes the opposite. Only time will tell ... but the current data is there for anyone to run with.
Without benefit of evidence to the contrary, I tend to side with Mark Steyn. But I'm fascinated with what motivates Mr. Goldman. Any information you might be able to provide me would be greatly appreciated, as I am not familiar with his line of thought.
This was just an opportunistic trip. Vueling, one of the low cost European airlines, had a special fare to 6 different destinations from our local airport for 10 Euros each way. That made it hard to resist. Fatima is about an 8 hour drive from where we live so we may the trip. There is also the Camino de Santiago and cheap airlines combined with a busy large airport nearby make so many destinations easily available it's hard to choose. We just got back from a trip to Florence, Milan, Pisa and Lucca. Round trip airfare was 60 euros each. Early retirement is working out well for us so far.
It’s been a while since I read Spengler’s book. However, if I correctly recall his thesis, he believed that Moslem societies suffer from the same existential despair as atheist Western societies, and that they will soon run out of steam.
The book was published in 2011; I do not know whether he has reevaluated his views in light of more recent events.
I'll say, wow! I paid more than that just to have my laundry done whilst there… ;)
