Ezekiel 1 (Old Testament)

Ezekiel’s Inaugural Vision

1 In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

2 On the fifth of the month—it was the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin— 3 the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians.[a] There the hand of the Lord was on him.

4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was human, 6 but each of them had four faces and four wings. 7 Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four of them had faces and wings, 9 and the wings of one touched the wings of another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved.

10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. 11 Such were their faces. They each had two wings spreading out upward, each wing touching that of the creature on either side; and each had two other wings covering its body. 12 Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. 13 The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. 14 The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning.

15 As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. 16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 17 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction as the creatures went. 18 Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around.

19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

22 Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked something like a vault, sparkling like crystal, and awesome. 23 Under the vault their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. 24 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty,[b] like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

25 Then there came a voice from above the vault over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. 26 Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne of lapis lazuli, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. 27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.

This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

People who read this Daily Thread already know that I was somewhat of a "Flower Child" in my Teenage years. What I probably never mentioned is that I was REALLY into "finding the truth" about Flying Saucers. I read everything I could about them, including a VERY STUPID Book in 1968 called "Chariots of the Gods". The author of that book still appears on "documentaries" on the History Channel, along with the Fuzzy-Haired Greek Man who has become a meme right here on FR! (IS SUCH A THING POSSIBLE? LOL)

"Chariots of the Gods was indeed a silly book, but it did ONE good thing. It had a whole chapter about Ezekiel's Vision of the Wheels, which made me look it up in our dusty old family Bible, which, up to that time, had never been opened by me. But I didn't just read the first Chapter...I kept reading, and haven't stopped.

From our Twenty First century Perspective, Ezekiel's Vision on the Riverbank seems to belong in the pages of a Sci-Fi novel instead of the Bible. But imagine what Ezekiel saw and how he would have expressed it in his own non-technical time. The wonderful, holy symmetry of the Heavenly Realm, dazzling his eyes and overwhelming his mind, and he would describe such a Vision with the most elegant and advanced technology of his own culture and time. That would, of course, be the invention by which we measure human development, refinement, and technological achievement. It is the Grandfather of Inventions, The Hallmark of Civilization, and the precursor to the Space Age.

The "math" involved in the Wheel, or Circle, is infinite and elegant. From it, we can make millions of designs, from a Cathedral's Rose Window, to A Star of David, constructed on the 60 degree angle. A mere look at the thousands of variations of hubcap designs show us the simple elegance, yet infinite possibilities, of the wheel.

It is so fitting that The One True God would present Himself to Ezekiel in this Awesome Way.

To all our Jewish FRiends who may be reading this Thread...Have a Blessed Rosh Hashana, and May Your name be Written in the Book of Life.

It's another one of those places that can draw a person into the infinite.

Wheels within wheels...

21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

Wheels of time. Sun, moon, stars, days, seasons, lunar years, solar years, metonic cycles, precession of the equinoxes, chalakim and regaim. They're all in there. :)

The "math" involved in the Wheel, or Circle, is infinite and elegant. From it, we can make millions of designs, from a Cathedral's Rose Window, to A Star of David, constructed on the 60 degree angle. If Ezekiel were standing outside of time to be able to view all of that, it would be amusingly paradoxical, considering:

Ezekiel 1:1 Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth [month], in the fifth [day] of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.

The chapter opens up with a wheel within a wheel within a wheel,

A day measured by the sun
A month measured by the moon
A year measured by the stars (שנת כוכבים)

Joseph had some trippy dreams. There's a list of ways Joseph and Ezekiel interconnect with ohr, light, starting with their fathers (Jacob + Buzi = 207, ohr).

The word for wheel (ophan) is an orphan on the standard etymological trail, however: Nun suffixes form abstract nouns and therefore can be separate from root letters, which leaves the root letters alef and pei.

These two are the root of a number of words that relate to the nose and sense of smell, the most spiritual of the senses because it is the sense most separate from physicality.

nose, nostril, anger, character, nature, baking and baked goods (c.f. Bethlehem, the house of bread).

The spirit of the living beings was in their "wheels", what their nature (abstract noun) revolves around.

There is a concept that the Mashiach through his sense of smell will discern a person's nature. Smell: reiach, from spirit, ruach.

The breathing of all vertebrates with lungs consists of repetitive cycles of inhalation and exhalation through a highly branched system of tubes or airways which lead from the nose to the alveoli.[3] The number of respiratory cycles per minute is the breathing or respiratory rate, and is one of the four primary vital signs of life.[4]

And, of course, the Solar System, the Galaxies, the Galactic Clusters, and the universe are all “Wheels Within Wheels”.

Could it be that Ezekiel was given a vision of the Cosmos, way before Galileo, Copernicus, or even Carl (Billyons and Billyons) Sagan?

No shortage of concepts, is there. The light was named Day, so wherever "yom" appears, there is light. Even in (and especially in) the Day of the Lord.

I’m familiar with the “ancient astronaut” theory documentaries. They mention the marvels of the ancients, the archeological and scientific puzzles. Much like we’re Sherlock Holmes examining a crime scene.
