The cashier asks, “What denomination?”

“Oy vey, has it come to this?” Ella asks. “OK, give me three Orthodox, ten Conservative, and twenty Reform.”

Great. It sounds just like a “Gracie Allen” joke; though Gracie was a actually Catholic woman married to a Jewish man. Gracie’s first role on the radio was with Eddie Cantor; another Jewish man. I’m sure her time in Vaudeville gave her a lot of “Jewish humor” experience as well and Vaudeville carried forward a lot of Irish Catholic humor of the day as well.
