Yes, you're probably right. Of course, I don't imagine the pope himself sits down at a computer, reviews the profiles of potential candidates, calls them in for interviews to determine their mindset before making a selection. Odds are that he relies on his advisors to make these determinations for him. Someone truly goofed!
Isn't the whole point that this matter is not settled for many (if not most) Catholics.
I return to my initial post that according to Luke in Acts, it was noble to verify the teachings of the Church leaders against the scriptures. Acts 17:11.

Newspaper Reports Cardinal Intentionally Overlooked Clinton
NEW YORK (CWN) - A New York newspaper reported today that Cardinal John O'Connor deliberately chose not to invite President Bill Clinton to an annual political dinner because of the president's failure to sign a bill banning partial-birth abortions.
The new York Post reported that the Smith Foundation has invited Vice-President Al Gore and Republican vice-presidential candidate Jack Kemp to the annual Al Smith political dinner three weeks before the November elections.
"Sources said the presidential snub is the latest shot fired in the archdiocesan crusade against Clinton's veto...." the Post said. "
This is the false impression one gets from watching and listening to "Catholics" presented in the massmedia -- nothing is ever settled for them because they are carefully selected for the show from among the heathens. The true Catholics are very happy with the Church; they can be seen in the churches on Sundays or on EWTN [Eternal Word Television Network a.k.a. Mother Angelica's TV].

Agreed.
Again, all the Catholic teachings I know are based solidly in the Scriptures.
My brother in law told me that many times, the board which nominates men to be Bishops will meet with the Pope with the 3 names to which they've narrowed the list. Instead, he'll bring up someone totally different, someone they haven't even considered, and that's who will be appointed. Slowly, but surely, I believe John Paul II is changing things by changing the men in charge.
