Behind the doors of sports’ most exclusive and secretive club is the sight of oil paintings and hardwood, the smell of cigar smoke baked into cushions and walls, the feel of familiar faces and the shuddering reminder of hangovers past.“'The Heisman flu,'” says Barbara Cassady, whose late husband, Howard “Hopalong” Cassady, was granted lifetime entry into the club in 1955, when the Ohio State halfback was awarded the Heisman Trophy, the annual honor for college football’s most outstanding player. From then on, one weekend every December was a massive reunion with a guest list filled with sports’ upper crust —...

Johnny Lujack, the 1947 Heisman Trophy winner at Notre Dame who became an All-Pro quarterback with the Chicago Bears, died in Florida on Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 98. Lujack's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Amy Schiller, who said he had entered hospice care recently after having been in good health until a couple of weeks ago. Lujack led Notre Dame to three national championships in a career interrupted by two years of Navy service during World War II. He earned unanimous All-America honors in both 1946 and 1947, as Notre Dame did not lose a game,...

Johnny Lujack was one of the faces of Notre Dame’s golden age, the second of three Irish players to win the Heisman Trophy in the 1940s and the quarterback of three national championship teams. “Even by Notre Dame standards, you always felt he was larger than life,” said John Heisler, who has written a dozen books on the history of the storied program where he was once was an associate athletic director. “Part of that comes with winning the Heisman Trophy, part comes from being a quarterback at Notre Dame and part comes from the sheer force of his personality.”...

In one of the craziest, uneven, and difficult-to-judge Heisman Trophy races in history, which player should take home the prestigious award? 1. DeVonta Smith | Alabama WR | Senior | Last week: 1As the arguable favorite heading into conference championship weekend, DeVonta Smith only helped his Heisman candidacy by racking up 15 receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns in Alabama’s win over Florida. Smith has had highlight-reel plays all season, and he’s been legitimately uncoverable. The senior receiver—who easily could have left for the NFL after last season yet stayed in school and got even better—is the Heisman Trophy...

Vince Lombardi was hard on everyone. But he loved Paul Hornung. Spend enough time listening to the old Green Bay Packers from the 1960s and they will share that if Lombardi had a favorite, it was his halfback from Notre Dame. Lombardi called Hornung "the best all-around back ever to play football.” Hornung died at age 84 after a battle with dementia. The Louisville Sports Commission announced Hornung’s death.

This yearÂ’s race for the Heisman Memorial Trophy is heating up. Regardless of most people feeling like the award is for Trevor Lawrence, the 2018 national champion and quarterback of Clemson has serious competition. Mac Jones of the University of Alabama is not playing around, and the redshirt junior from Florida is having an incredible season. He is pacing an Alabama offense that leads the Southeastern Conference in every major category, while ranking in the top-five nationally for every category. After proving to coaches, teammates, fans and media pundits that he could take over for an injured Tua Tagovailoa in...

As he accepted the coveted Heisman trophy, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow addressed the children in his hometown of Athens, Ohio, where thousands of residents live in poverty. "Coming from southeast Ohio, it's a very impoverished area and the poverty rate is almost two times the national average," he said in his acceptance speech Saturday. "There's so many people there that don't have a lot. And I'm up here for all those kids in Athens and Athens County that go home to not a lot of food on the table, hungry after school. You guys can be up here, too."

For this year’s Army-Navy game, the Midshipmen have a new — err, old — look, and the Black Knights will honor a contingent of soldiers that attacked from the air. No. 24 Navy will wear uniforms inspired by the teams of the 1960s and a pair of Heisman trophy winners: halfback Joe Bellino and quarterback Roger Staubach. The Mids will wear blue tops with gold shoulder stripes and gold numbers, along with plain gold breeches. The tops feature the American Athletic Conference logo patch, the college football 150th anniversary patch and a patch signifying each Naval unit.

Navy football lost one of its legends Thursday when Joe Bellino died in his home state of Massachusetts at the age of 81. Bellino, the 1960 Heisman Trophy winner as a standout halfback for the Midshipmen, had been in failing health for some time. Bellino was nicknamed the “Winchester Rifle” – a reference to his hometown and high school as well as his explosive running style. He was described by one newspaper reporter as “the player who was never caught from behind.” He starred at Navy from 1958-1960 under head coach Wayne Hardin, rushing for 1,664 yards on 330 carries...

Oklahoma quarterback and Oakland A’s first-round draft pick Kyler Murray is days away from deciding the next step of his athletic career. The Heisman Trophy winner has until Sunday to declare for the 2019 NFL draft, which would put his baseball career on hold indefinitely in the hopes of beating the odds as an undersized quarterback. We asked Mike Oz, Frank Schwab and Sam Cooper to make the case as to why Kyler Murray should either stick with his original path of playing baseball, declaring for the NFL draft or return to the Sooners for his senior season.

Kyler Murray won one of college football’s highest honors on Saturday as he was awarded the Heisman Trophy for his excellence as quarterback for Oklahoma, but USA Today wasn’t focused on his football accomplishments. In a report published late Saturday night, USA Today dug up several tweets and claimed that Murray had made homophobic statements on Twitter. According to the report, Murray called one of his friends a “queer” in 2012. He was 15 years old at the time of the tweet. In response to this hit from USA Today, Murray humbly apologized for the comments he had made when...

NEW YORK CITY - Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy Saturday night, the seventh Oklahoma Sooners football player to win college football's most coveted award. Murray beat out Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Ohio State signal caller Dwayne Haskins for the honor, handed out in New York City in front of a national television audience. Murray's win one year after Baker Mayfield's is the first back-to-back Heisman win for one school since Army West Point's Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis did it back in 1945 and 1946. Murray led the nation in total yards with 4,945 and had 51 touchdowns...

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will need to pull a slight upset to win the Heisman Trophy when voting gets announced Saturday. (AP Photo)At times, the story of Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's college career has approached folklore status. If he played before the digital era, tales of his feats would present an American Samoan rival to Paul Bunyan, replete with a ukulele instead of an axe. Alabama has signed five-star quarterbacks before. But Trent Dilfer compared high-school Tagovailoa favorably to college sophomore Aaron Rodgers. As a true freshman, Tagovailoa did not play a snap of football with the outcome undetermined until...
